CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
The University at Albany’s Department of Latin American, Caribbean, and US Latino Studies in collaboration with the Music Department and the Performing Arts Center will be hosting a two day symposium devoted to exploring all aspects of Puerto Rican music on October 26 and 27, 2012.
Expected to be in attendance include composers Roberto Sierra, William Ortiz and Raymond Torres-Santos as well as performers Narciso and Rafael Figueroa.
The symposium will coincide with the 20th anniversary conference of the Puerto Rican Studies Association also being held on the campus of the University at Albany.
All scholars and performers interested in the music of Puerto Rico are cordially invited to submit e-mail proposals for papers, panels, lecture/recitals, poster and media presentations. Proposals on all issues relevant to Puerto Rican music will be considered. Topics of special interest to the program committee include:
The folk music of Puerto Rico: Bomba, Plena, Danza Puertoriqueña
Puerto Rican music and identity
Pablo Casals and classical music in Puerto Rico — His legacy and influence
Three generations of Puerto Rican Composers on the island and the mainland including Héctor Campos Parsi, Jack Délano, Ernesto Cordero, Rafael Aponte-Ledée, William Ortiz, Roberto Sierrra, Raymond Torres-Santos
Puerto Rican musicians in New York City including Rafael Hernández, Tito Puente,
Charlie Palmieri, Willie Colón, and more
Proposals in Spanish or English will be accepted until March 20, 2012.
Proposals should be submitted as a WORD or PDF file attachment to mlif...@albany.edu indicating in the subject heading "Puerto Rican Music Conference."
The first page of the proposal should include title, author name(s), academic affiliation, contact information, brief biographical information, and equipment/technical needs (such as piano, stereo playback, computer and/or overhead projector). A second page with a 250 word abstract of the proposed presentation should follow.
Please note that individual papers will be limited to 30 minutes. Panels (3-6 participants) will be limited to 60 minutes. Lecture/Recitals will be limited to 60 minutes.
