Association of Bookmobile & Outreach Services
Nominations for 2013 Office and Board Positions
Biographical Statements
A pre-election survey will take place prior to the ballot. The election wi=
ll take place via Survey Monkey from 11/26/2012 through 12/3/2012.
Vice President/President Elect - Serves for one year. Vote for one.
Eletha Davis, Mobile Library Services Manager, Youth and Neighborhood Outre=
ach, Williamsburg Regional Library
I am running for office because I believe in mobile library service, inform=
ation is power, literacy, hospitality, going the extra mile, and service to=
organizations that make a difference. ABOS has truly been a blessing to me=
in my professional career, and I would like to "pass the baton" by sharing=
my knowledge, skills, and abilities. I have a lot to contribute, and just=
as previous officers of the association, I can continue to help build a le=
gacy of information, skills, knowledge, and excellence for the Association =
of Bookmobiles and Outreach Services. Our best hope for the survival of bo=
okmobiles and outreach is knowledgeable, innovative, and well-trained profe=
ssionals. I have more than 28 years of bookmobile service. I also have tw=
o graduate degrees, one in Social Work and the other in Library Science, an=
d certificates in Public Participant, Communications for Effective Public P=
articipant, and Techniques for Effective Public Participant. I have served=
on numerous boards and committees and have coordinated the logistics of co=
nferences and training sessions. I am also a seasoned well-prepared presen=
ter and trainer. I am dedicated and a hard worker. I have been the recipi=
ent of many honors and many awards, which I am very thankful, but the most =
rewarding thing for me is providing people, of all ages, access to informat=
ion, books, and technology. I strongly believe in using what you have, mak=
ing the better best, and smaller vehicles do not mean shrinking library ser=
vice. My years of experience, education, dedication, and willingness to se=
rve are the ideal combinations for the office of vice president/president e=
lect of the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services.
Melanie Sperling, Outreach Manager, Boone County Public Library
I am the Outreach Manager for the Boone County Public Library in Northern K=
entucky. Prior to coming to the BCPL in 2001, I worked at the Xavier Univer=
sity Libraries in Cincinnati for 15 years in positions ranging from student=
assistant to circulation librarian.
The Outreach Manager position was created in February, 2012. I received thi=
s promotion in recognition of my relationships over the last 5 years with a=
rea colleges and senior care facilities. Working from my car, I provide bib=
liographic instruction, short talks and book discussions for adults. I mana=
ge the world's best outreach delivery team and have coworkers with huge hea=
rts who help with all that I do.
My most unique experience is the BCPL's partnership with Cincinnati's Frees=
tore Foodbank to provide monthly distributions of 10,000 lbs. of groceries =
to needy families. Conducting successful distributions involves finding 15 =
volunteers willing to work in the library parking lot distributing grocerie=
s to 200 families during a two-hour period. To find the 200 families, I con=
tact schools, coworkers and social service agencies as well as knock on doo=
rs in subsidized housing facilities. I invite influential members of our co=
mmunity to help with the distribution with the hope that they will donate t=
he $1,250 that I need to pay for each delivery from the Freestore Foodbank.
I attended my first ABOS conference this year as a recipient of a Carol Hol=
e Conference Attendance Grant. Without the grant, I would not have been abl=
e to attend. I found each session to be brimming with useful information. B=
ecause of this experience, I am running for Vice President/President-Elect =
because I feel passionate about the ABOS. If elected, I would work diligent=
ly with the officers and board members to continue to provide the superior =
experience to others that I had when joining the ABOS.
Secretary - Serves for one year. Vote for one.
Kathryn Totten, Branch Manager, Manager of Outreach Services, Anythink Libr=
aries
I am a branch manager and the manager of Outreach Services for Anythink Lib=
raries in Adams County, CO. I am a former president of ABOS, serving as =
president the year we had a combined conference with ARSL in Denver. For se=
veral years I have served on the website/technology committee. In 2012 I p=
articipated in the selecting of our new logo and website design. In 2011 I=
served on the Bylaws committee. We now have very clear Bylaws and a Polic=
ies and Procedures manual which helps the board and officers make clear dec=
isions for ABOS. I have been involved in site selection for a few of the A=
BOS conferences as well as the ABOS contact person for our vendors and spon=
sors. I served in 2012 as the secretary for ABOS. I would like to continu=
e for another year. My focus will be on continuing with document retention=
and organization, gathering ABOS history from members, and updating the Ha=
ndbook for Mobile Services Staff.
Treasurer - Serves for one year. Vote for one.
Wendy Ramsey, Team Leader, Outreach Services, Columbus Public Library
I am a 31 year employee at the Columbus Metropolitan Library in Columbus, O=
hio. I have been an Assistant Branch Manager/Youth Services librarian at t=
wo of our branches, Youth Services Coordinator and also Staff Development C=
oordinator during my time at CML. Since 2001 I have been programming to ch=
ildren with special needs through our Main library but in 2009 I was transf=
erred to Outreach Services and became a Team Leader in charge of Programmin=
g. It was then I was introduced to the ABOS listserv. I attended my first =
ABOS conference in 2011 in Cleveland and became interested in serving on th=
e board. I am the current ABOS Treasurer and would like to continue in tha=
t role for another year. I have made it a priority this year to keep the A=
BOS Board informed of all the financial transactions in a way that helps th=
em see the spending patterns but doesn't put anyone to sleep!
Board Members - Serve for two years. Vote for 3.
Lori Berezovsky, Community Outreach Coordinator, Salina Public Library
A native of DeKalb, Illinois, Lori Berezovsky graduated from Northern Illin=
ois University with a BA and MA in art history before moving to Kansas. She=
earned her MLS from Emporia State University and started her library caree=
r as a reference librarian at Salina Public Library in 1994. Five years ago=
Lori was named head of the newly created outreach department at Salina Pub=
lic Library, which includes the library's lifelong learning program, CLASS =
(Community Learning and Skill Sharing), and public relations in its scope. =
Lori continually seeks out new ways to be the "face" of the library, such a=
s the book cart drill team she assembled for a local parade, or Get Caught =
Reading at the Festival where teams of staff members roam the annual Smoky =
Hill River Festival grounds looking for readers. Her newest outreach projec=
t is Celebrate Salina, an online venue to celebrate the people and things t=
hat make Salina, KS a better place. In addition, Lori currently serves on S=
alina's Volunteer Connection advisory council.
Lori sums it up by saying, "ABOS was a wonderful discovery several years ag=
o, and opened up a whole new world of outreach information, friends and con=
tacts, and a community of support that had been missing. Being a Board Memb=
er-at-Large would allow me to pay it forward by helping to shape the future=
of the organization that has been such an inspiration to me."
Alexandria Godina, Head of Outreach Services, Clearview Library District
Hi ABOS members! I am Ally (Alexandria) Godina, and I am excited about the =
opportunity to serve as a Board-Member-at-Large for the upcoming year. As t=
he Head of Outreach Services, I manage eight wonderful and dedicated outrea=
ch staff and our absolutely amazing two-year-old Bookmobile that visits com=
munities delivering storytimes, books, media, crafts, programs and conversa=
tion to patrons of all ages and abilities. I was fortunate to attend the AB=
OS conference for the first time this year and although fairly new to ABOS =
and new to bookmobiles, I am not new to libraries or Outreach Services. For=
the past seven years that I have been in libraries, my passion remains in =
reaching out into the community and bringing the tremendous services the li=
brary offers wherever I go.
What I love most about being an outreach librarian and what I'm excited to =
share with the ABOS Board is my passion and enthusiasm for what the library=
can offer sans the traditional library setting (and walls). As well, I'm p=
assionate about getting great books/media into the hands of both eager and =
reluctant readers, ensuring equitable access of library materials, and thro=
ugh these interactions, creating lifelong library users.
As a manager of a new bookmobile and outreach department I have a lot of kn=
owledge to gain, but I also feel my diverse experience in public/academic l=
ibraries, knowledge and commitment to working with all ages of library patr=
ons and new and innovative ideas will serve as a great asset to the ABOS bo=
ard. I would be so appreciative of the opportunity to be a Board-Member-at-=
Large and help keep ABOS the relevant and useful organization that it is.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Jennifer Kelley, Publicity and Outreach Librarian, Kershaw County Library S=
ystem
I am the Publicity and Outreach Librarian for the Kershaw County Library sy=
stem, a small system located in the Midlands of South Carolina. After many =
years in retail (primarily bookselling) and banking, I finally decided what=
I wanted to do when I grew up. So, at the age of 50(ish) I returned to sch=
ool to earn my Master's in Library and Information Science at the Universit=
y of South Carolina.
As Outreach Librarian (a department of one) I am responsible for bringing l=
ibrary services to those who cannot come to the library-for any number of r=
easons. Doing storytimes at local daycares, or visiting senior centers, or =
bringing the bookmobile to local community events, my job brings me into co=
ntact with such a variety of individuals that I can share my passion for bo=
oks, reading, and libraries.
I am a recent member of ABOS, and I am eager to play a larger role in this =
wonderful organization. I believe that Outreach is such a vital part of wha=
t libraries are doing today-we serve as advocates for library services in m=
any nontraditional ways-and we are out there in the community every day. I=
'm eager to learn from others, and do my part in raising the awareness of t=
he many Outreach services libraries have to offer.
Lola Snyder, Outreach/ Book Bus Coordinator, Evansville Vanderburgh Public =
Library
My name is Lola Snyder. I work at Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library in =
southwest Indiana and have done so for 15 years. The entirety of my career =
has been in the Children's department as the Book Bus coordinator serving d=
aycares and preschools. Over the years I have expanded services to the gene=
ral public and am now delving into senior services. Three years ago I deci=
ded that I wanted to have more of a stake in the future of my library and t=
he library as a whole so I returned to school and received my MLS in the fa=
ll of 2012 from IUPUI in Indianapolis. It was a phenomenal experience that =
reenergized me through new learning and in depth conversations with others =
who are passionate about librarianship. I have been involved in ABOS since =
the beginnings in Columbus, OH and am excited about the path the members ha=
ve chosen for our organization under the leadership of the ABOS Board. Beca=
use of their example and dedication to Outreach services and this organizat=
ion, I was inspired to serve on the Marketing Committee last year. My recen=
t studies and continued commitment to ABOS have created in me the desire to=
be involved at an even deeper level with ABOS as a Board Member-at-Large.
Michael Swendrowski, Specialty Vehicle Services, LLC
If honored with a second term on the Board, I look forward to contributing =
my unique expertise to the Board overall, and further to working with the M=
arketing Committee specifically to further the reach of our Association wor=
ldwide. I believe there are many outreach departments that would benefit g=
reatly from the benefits and resources of our esteemed group, and that they=
only need to know more about us! With the new website now complete, I fee=
l it's an excellent opportunity to develop new marketing materials and meth=
ods to reach these folks and welcome them into the fold. I hope you agree!
Thank you in advance for your vote!
Marianne Thompson, Outreach Services Manager, Fountaindale Public Library D=
istrict
I am Marianne Thompson, Outreach Services Manager for Fountaindale Public L=
ibrary District, Bolingbrook, IL. I have worked for Fountaindale for 23 ye=
ars, and have over 34 years of experience as a professional librarian.
* I received my MLS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1978.
* In 1978, I worked at Winding Rivers Library System (WI), on the B=
ookmobile & discovered the world of Outreach Library Service!
* I became Information Services Manager at Fountaindale Public Libr=
ary (IL), 1989. I started a mail program for patrons who could not get to t=
he library. The library had no Outreach department at that time.
* In 2002, the Board approved the purchase of a 32 foot Matthews Bo=
okmobile, and service began in February 2003. In 2006, when the Outreach M=
anager left, I asked to have Outreach Services added to my duties. I saw t=
his as an opportunity to grow the service.
* Under my direction:
o staff doubled,
o services increased to elementary & preschools,
o home bound delivery was expanded.
o partnerships with the schools to provide literacy programs
o partnership with Panera Bread for "Milk & Cookies" story time
o partnership with senior centers to provide Bookmobile service, book clu=
bs, and game days
o partnership with Park District for events ,"Tons of Trucks", "Halloween=
Happenings", summer park visits
o partnership with Township for back-to-school events, senior health fair=
s
o developed highly successful puppet shows for Bookmobile as new summer p=
rogramming - (MOPS-Mobile Outreach Puppeteers)
* ABOS board member since 2012
I believe successful Outreach library service is to deliver and provide lib=
rary materials to those who can't come to the library, and to share my love=
of reading with library patrons. Outreach & Bookmobile services are extrem=
ely vital for libraries to provide to their residents, especially in our cu=
rrent economic situation.
Sam Wallin, Rural Services Coordinator, Fort Vancouver Regional Library Dis=
trict
I'm married and I have two kids (Hazel and Henry). I am an award-winning p=
laywright (My play "Memory Fragments" won the Stanley Drama Award in 2009).=
Before I was a librarian, I worked for three years as a beer brewer. Be=
fore that, I worked for two years as a coffee roaster. I've never liked se=
lling things. I like making things and giving things away.
I have been working in libraries for about 8 years, starting in circulation=
while earning my master's degree. I have been a reference librarian and a=
branch manager for a small town library. Since January of 2012, I have be=
en the Rural Services Coordinator for the Fort Vancouver Regional Library D=
istrict. Our district has just retired one bookmobile, and the future is u=
nclear for the remaining two vehicles. My job has been to research, plan, =
and execute alternate ways to serve the affected rural populations. In my =
first year I set up three "Library Expresses" - small, mostly unstaffed, st=
ationary library facilities. The smallest of these is a hold pick-up and a=
book drop up at a rural school, while the most robust is a 325 sq. ft. uns=
taffed library, with a collection, computers, hold pick-up, and wifi, which=
patrons can access by unlocking the front door with their library card and=
a barcode reader.
I attended my first ABOS conference in 2012, where I presented the session =
"Creativity Abounds," outlining the many different stationary services libr=
aries around the US are putting in place in diverse, remote, and rural area=
s.
The future of bookmobiles, outreach, rural services, and stationary library=
installations in non-library locations is an interesting and dynamic subje=
ct. I would like to be a resource for information and ideas for the member=
s of ABOS, as this area of service continues to be explored.
Respectfully submitted,
Karen Wiedman

I can continue to help build a legacy of information,
skills, knowledge, and excellence for the Association of Bookmobiles and O=

utreach is knowledgeable, innovative, and well-trained professionals. =
I have more than 28 years of bookmobile service.
I also have two graduate degrees, one in Social Work and the other in Libr=
ary Science, and certificates in Public Participant, Communications for Eff=
ective Public Participant, and Techniques for Effective Public Participant.=
I have served on numerous boards
and committees and have coordinated the logistics of conferences and train=
ing sessions. I am also a seasoned well-prepared presenter and traine=
r. I am dedicated and a hard worker. I have been the recipient =
of many honors and many awards, which I am very
thankful, but the most rewarding thing for me is providing people, of all =
ages, access to information, books, and technology. I strongly believ=

Regional Library District. Our district has just retired one bookmob=

has been to research, plan, and execute alternate
ways to serve the affected rural populations. In my first year I set=
up three “Library Expresses” - small, mostly unstaffed, statio=

a book drop up at a rural school, while the most robust
is a 325 sq. ft. unstaffed library, with a collection, computers, hold pic=
