Yesterday saw the kick off of our fund-drive to buy a bookmobile. We have been bookmobile deprived for 10 years! In 24 hours we raised a little over $30,000 - YEA! I am really so encouraged. We held a kickoff at each branch with food and entertainment. We were covered by 2 TV stations and spent one morning on the drive time live radio show. " Mobilizing for a Cause" is our slogan. We hope to raise $200,000 by the end of the year and be on the road in 2013. Barb Read Rolling Hills Consolidated Library St Joseph MO

$30,000 in 24 hours? WOW! I believe that qualifies as a "successful beginning." :)

The 2012 ABOS conference will take place in Richmond, VA. If you live in the area or are feeling a bit adventurous, we would LOVE to see your bookmobile at the conference. One of the big draws for many participants each year is being able to visit with other librarians and their vehicles on-site. In addition, everyone loves a bookmobile, and it sure draws attention to us as an organization!
This year, ABOS would like to invite you to drive your vehicle to our conference. As an incentive, we are offering the following:
-free registration ( one free registration per vehicle) -fuel reimbursement ( .55 a mile, up to $250) -free meals provided for participants during display hours ( limited to two individuals per vehicle per day)
These incentives apply only to library owned vehicles and participants operating on the behalf of the organization and/or their library system. Vendor owned vehicles do not qualify. If you are taking delivery of a new vehicle from a vendor at the conference and would like to have it on display, mileage reimbursement will not apply - but you are still eligible to receive free registration and meals.
If you would like to participate, please contact me ( Brad Thomas) by email and we will discuss arrangements.
Thank you so much for all that you do, And I hope to see you at the conference.

-- Greetings Barb, The curiousity is killing me. Would you mind sharing how you coordinated your fundraising project? I am trying to coordinate a fundraiser here because we need a bookmobile. I want to use it for outreach. Everyone has a dream. Good for you!!!!!! Congrats!!! Julia
Hi Julia. Our plot is as follows. First we collected a Foundation Board of members unafraid (in fact used to ) ask for money. We raided other Boards in town for successful members. This was not deliberate just happened. We found one prime mover (former VP of Xerox) and he taught the others. Then we got a newly retired banker who had organized many projects and oozes charm. Next we had organizational meetings where they compiled lists of people and companies that we could approach. Then talking points were decided on - gotta be all singing the same song. Next the Board of Trustees and Foundation Board each donated money - this was so we could say that we had 100% participation by the folks asking for money. Why should I donate to something you are not willing to support yourself? Next we planned a kickoff date and had banners made, food arranged for, and some light entertainment. Then they divided up the media according to which they thought they had the most pull with and arranged for stories and appearances in the three days leading up to the kickoff. We also created a powerpoint presentation that featured the logos of businesses we were going to approach for major contributions. These pointed out that with the bookmobile on the road each week throughout the county for approximately 10 years their participation (translation ad) would be visible to many folks on a repetitive basis attached to a worthy cause and darn cheap on a per view basis. That lead to the $30,000 donation right quick. They wanted the prime real-estate on the bus. We are over the $40,000 mark now and closing on $45,000. Hope this helps. Barb

Barb

Good Job Barb on your fundraising efforts for your new bookmobile! Julia, you have been a great advocate for outreach services for Park County and trying to get a new bookmobile. I believe you will succeed in changing our Wyoming bookmobile numbers from two to three!!! Now if we can get one in Campbell County as well. I know Pat would like to see one there! :0)
