ok, so i am getting close to getting mine running. does any body have
pictures of how your mounted the motor to the body? did everybody use
the engine bar? or bolt it??? pictures!!!!

cool, that helps a ton. i have read your blog a ton of times and
somehow missed those. its cool you had help. im at this alone and
this is my 1st EV conversion.

which adapter plate did you use? and is it like an L for the engine
mount bar? i am using a GE motor and does not have a side mount for
anything.

  I built the EV with the 914 AC kit from Electro.  They provided the adapter plate and motor mount:

ah, im building a budget porsche... haha. i would like to go that
route but pricey. do you have pretty good acceleration with that kit?

and im going DC vrs AC.

Hi Brian,

I am like you, beginning to convert my 1975 914 to a DC system.  I know we are way behind the curve from others on the list, however there may be other "lurkers" like myself who sit back and learn without giving back. For this I apologize and perhaps can share my mishaps and experience as I progress. 

It has taken me a year to get my car "road worthy" . By this I mean it no longer has smoke drifitng up from under the dash, accelerator pedals falling off while driving, brakes failing, and a wheel falling off at 40 mph. My local tow shop is on speed dial.

I have been looking for shops to help with the conversion and took a weekend class last year with a group "ampmoble" in south Carolina.  they seem to work with EV america in New Hampshire.  I have just written them to get started and know that they use a clutchless system. I had a chance to drive one of their conversions and was very impressed with the ease of shifting.  Many on the list will abhor this idea, but it does make the conversion simpler and less expensive and I did not feel unsafe at all.

I think I have memorized most of the websites and I do thank all of you who have produced them.

Let me know how you are progressing and what your thoughts are on controllers, batteries, and modifications that companies like Electo-auto feel are necessary to the brakes and suspension.

well, you want to get your 914 back to a 914 1st... a EV conversion is
the next step. i am not very far. i am fighting the 914 back to a 914
as well. alli have is a motor, and its almost mounted.

Great to hear from you Brian.

It finally is running well and I have the motor, adapter plate and motor mount on order.

My question,  can you remove the engine without taking out the trans?  I hope to avoid disconnecting the CV joints?

A few weeks ago I was chatting with a local mechanic that work on 914s; he mentioned he saw a guy that used to take the engine out without the transaxle but had never seen anyone else do that. He really wrestled with it; it's not easy. So, apparently it can be done, but it is easier all around (removal, installation, supporting it w/o engine) to lower the whole unit. The CV joints are just 4 bolts per side, and not difficult to remove.

I pulled both the motor and tranny. My car had torx fasteners on the axles, I tried to sneak by using a hex (fit real well) and got through 7 bolts before stripping it and having to grind in a flat head. if the bolt is a torx get the proper driver :)

They shouldn't be torx unless someone changed them. They should be spline drive (which are 12 point; torx are 6 point). Some people replace these with standard hex heads but better to get the right thing (part# N-014-715-2-M5036), then get the right tool (part# TOL-SK45438, or http://tinyurl.com/mtbycu). Don't forget the washers (part# 999-523-102-02-OEM).
