I've been really happy with my Electro Automotive AC Voltsporsche conversion for about three years. Now the DMOC 445 controller has become unreliable. Three times now I've driven about 7 miles and just plain stopped dead. I've looked at EE3_LAST_ERROR and it is 2,048 - CURRENT_CALIBRATION_FAULT. The DMOC manual says, "Rare; may be associated with 12V supply problems".

I looked carefully at everything connected to the DMOC, especially the 12V system, and I replaced my keyswitch, put in better fuses (12V blade type) and added a couple of protection diodes around 12V relay coils. It all seems sound, but the fault still happened again.

So now, with no support available from Azure, I'm looking for an alternate controller. I spotted the MES-DEA TIM-600. It is almost a drop-in replacement for the DMOC except that it's water cooled. I can deal with that, but it is pricey at almost $5000. Has anyone looked at this unit? Is it likely to work fine with an Azure AC24LS motor? Is the manufacturer (in Italy) likely to be around longer than Azure?

Please share your experience - the good weather is coming and I'd like to drive this thing again. Thanks!

Hey Jack,

What a sweet little ride ;)

Are those real Fuchs, or repros, and if you are running center caps,
where did you get them?

THere are some people that are using the Curtis AC controller - it is not liquid cooled and can easily handle the AC24LS.  There's a set of discussions on this over on DIYElectricCar.  I believe that you can buy the controller and then rent the update tool.

Cheers,

Mark,

I believe the wheels are original Fuchs' - when I went after a vehicle to convert I grabbed the best one I could find and this one had all sorts of nice extras and *almost* no rust. Your conversion is really beautiful! I really just wanted to get my car converted and on the road so I didn't attempt a complete bottom-up restoration like you've done. Great job!

As for a Curtis controller, it looks like so far they only have AC units that are good up to 90 Volts or so. But there are rumors that they'll come out with a 144V compatible unit soon. I may just have to wait for that. The MES-DEA conroller is expensive and there are rumblings that their technical support isn't too great. And I really would like to get away from the Azure Dynamics stuff that's not supported at all.

Thanks for everyone's comments - Jack.......
