Camping Mar 9-11 2007 (Friday afternoon to Sunday morning)You can edit this page - use the Edit button to top right Google earth placemark to turnoff to Palm Springs Canyon (you need Google Earth installed to view this) Google earth placemark very near to actual campsite. Hollywood and Vine sign is on bluff to NNW from here.
In Anza Borrego State Park, near Agua Caliente Springs, region
of Mud Hills, Hollywood and Vine Sign (see attached maps). This area is supposed to have lots of interesting slot canyons and mud caves to explore.
We’ll be camping in a canyon (not in any official campsite). We will bring a metal pan on which to build a fire and shovel for toilet. This is low desert country with average temperature lows in March of 40s F and highs of mid 80s F. The campsite is in a wash with beautiful sandstone hills and gullies around it. Some people will be bringing fireworks with intention of creating massive impression of destruction. We will also go for a hike on Saturday to explore the area. Phone numbersJonathan Delbruck (cell 858 442 5082) will act as clearing house for emergency contacts. (Cell phones may not work at the camping area.) Tobi Delbruck (626 796 3682) will coordinate food and supplies. Checklist:Sleeping bag, ground cover, tent (if windy, usually very nice to sleep under stars), boots, water bottles, flashlight, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, backpacks, Frisbee, books, explosives, knife, rock hammer, magnifying glasses, ant collection bottles, cappuchino machine. DirectionsFrom Pasadena: 210 east to I15 south to 79 south to S2 past 78 past Agua Caliente Springs, at Canebrake Rd, turn off east into Palm Springs Canyon, follow directions on detailed map. From Fig. 2 map: Turns off S-2 at Palm Springs Cyn (across hwy from Canbrake) and follow the dirt road about 4 miles; after you pass the Hollywood and Vine sign on bluff on left, camp is another half mile against the canyon wall on the right. This is near W 116 11’ 24”, N 32 53’ 24”. Drive takes about 3 hours from Pasadena. Road should be accessible to 2 wheel drive passenger cars with care to watch for rocks on road and sandy places where you could get stuck. If you feel your car getting stuck, do not gun car, you will just dig into sand. Send passengers out to push the car out of the soft spot. If you get lost or stuck and cannot find the others, stop and wait (just camp if necessary); we will come look for you. The turnoff and route will be marked with fluorescent pink spray chalk.
