Ruby Site UIs

Maybe its because I've always worked with under the hood kind of stuff
on the desktop and not the web but every time I look at Ruby devs
website it seems to look elegant and well designed. Did all of you
just take your time with mastering CSS or just know really good
graphic designers?

I know its a little off topic but it has been puzzling me.

In my case, I used to be a designer. For others, I think it is a mix of most Ruby devs strive to know good CSS and/or work in small teams that put proper placement on front end design too.

I think a lot of Ruby (esp. Rails) devs are proficient with the frontend, and can *technically* write great markup and stylesheets, and at least recreate a variant of another design. Whether we're all artistically inclined and can independently come up with great designs is another story...
