Douglas Johnston's Hipster PDA templates finally convinced me I needed to start carrying one of those bad boys with me. I'm concerned about the edges of the index cards getting ragged or accidentally bent, so I need a case. I did a bunch of searching here, at 43folders and the 43folders wiki but couldn't find what i was looking for.
What is everyone here using?
I could handle either a cover or a full case that the hipster slides in and out of. I'm hoping to spend fewer than $10.

It might be too big for carrying around in you pocket, but the Moleskine Memo Pocket book can be had for right around $10. It's the one that's a mini accordion file with 6 pockets.
It's a classy alternative if you don't mind something a little larger, and if you value the organiztion of multiple pockets.
I'd be curious to know if others are using the 'Moleskine Hipster' and how they've set them up.
I picked the "leatherette" 3x5 wallet up at Target as well. Enclosed
is a picture. It holds 20+ cards or so. I like the tabs on the flap
so that you can stick a couple of cards right in there for easy
access. The drawbacks to it are that it has more of a leatherette
feel to it. It's soft, but doesn't feel quite right. The other thing
is that it doesn't stay fully closed - the flap always sticks up a
bit. Maybe that's just because I have too many cards inside. As you
can tell from the photo, I've put Doug J's DIY planner 3x5 edition to
use. I wanted to take the opportunity to publicly thank Doug for the
work he put into that. I find it extremely useful!
I use the Moleskine memo pocket as well. I put a large paperclip on the front pocket (not the flap), and hold a few cards there for writing on. I put a stash of cards behind them in the first pocket. Used cards, for reference or later transfer to my inbox, go in the other pockets, sorted by whatever happens to be convenient at the time.
Works for me.
I don't carry a pen with it, but I usually have one with me somewhere. My preferred pen is a Pentel EnerGel, fine tip (0.7mm).

It seems that one is trying to find a way to hold the "Hipster" is a bit redundant. For many years there has been pocket diaries made just for 3 x 5. The common 6 ring one that many companies make binders for... and index card cases. The Hipster is a fun idea but it really is just a new way to"market" an old idea or reinvent the wheel. It's one thing to carry a few index cards as the Hipster intended. It's another to create dividers, project pages... Basically it is then a full fledged planner/organizer.
If you are just carrying a few cards then a rubberband, hair band or binder clip in a clear bag (clearbags.com) works fine. If you are creating a planner then I'd look at filofax, kate spade, coach, designers guild (leather), or mead -plastic for a buck at wal mart. And the target cases are cool.

That reminded me of something my mom said when I was first starting:
"You know that they used file folders before computers, right?"

The problem with the ringed binders is that they don't ride well in
the back pocket. And going with just a clip can create problems from
fraying/moisture/etc. But I agree that the answers are pretty simple:
buy or fashion a simple case!
I use a Moleskine cover. My venture into Moleskines was a failure -
the book fell apart - but as a result I have a Moleskine cover without
anything in it.

I found some translucent plastic dividers, with alphabetic tabs, for 3x5 cards (@ any office supply store). Cut off the tabs and you get a great cover. I use a binder clip to keep it all together.
