Am hoping some enterprising folks might be able to aid me here.

I'm a huge fan of Quicksilver and recently downloaded the del.icio.us
plug-in for it, but have no idea how this is supposed to work and have
been as of yet unable to find any documentation on it -- even through a
number of Google searches.

Anyone have pointers? Can I read/write to my del.icio.us bookmark list?

Additionally, on a related topic, one drawback with del.icio.us I'm
finding is my inability to remember bookmark categories I create. Am
using the bookmarklet for Safari and pumping my RSS feed into my
Newsfire reader, but whenever I do come across something to bookmark, I
find myself scratching my head: What category is best? What have I
previously used?

I fear that del.icio.us will, as with my local bookmarks, become
something that gets loaded with stuff that's difficult to find.
Any pointers would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Anthony

Well, if you're looking in GTD terms...

I use @action, @blog, and @read tags, and the rest are all
"reference" tags - single words that tie into what the subject matter
is.

You need to actively work on refining your vocabularly I have a huge
pile of "junk" ones from before I got organised with it, that (one
day, if I'm bedridden but have a laptop) I intend to go through and
file/discard - but the rest are pruned down to a few key words.

Generally items that get @ tags get some sort of reference as well, so
I still have the some sort of tag for it after I've removed the @ tag.
Some of them don't - they can generally be deleted.

Mostly, the system is literally about a) getting things done (@ tags)
or b) future reference (normal tags) that relate to fields I have a
particular interest in.

Hope that helps somehow :)

My take on the bookmark categories:

I don't hardly use them as categories. I have a few selected categories
that I treat as folders: I have a programming bookmark into which I
dump articles that fit into there, and a few others.

But I also generally just label things with the first tag that comes to
mind. Many of my categories have one or two items, total.

Example: I have a "more" tag, which contains a link to an awesome
claymation movie entitled "More." That's the only link in the category,
and there will probably never be another link in there. But this is
cool because now I can use my browser's search box any time I want to
visit that one page about "More."

Furthermore, the del.icio.us search box will search on descriptions.
This means that I can search for "music video" and it will bring up
"More" and any other links i've described using "music" and "video."
It's like Google for my own personal mini-web.

Oh, and regarding getting the quicksilver plugin to work:
- make sure you've put your username and password in (in the
preferences window, choose "del.icio.us" from the list of preference
sets)
- make sure your del.icio.us bookmarks are in the catalog (in the
catalog window, expand "modules" and make sure "del.icio.us" is checked
off and has a non-zero number of items listed. if it has no items
listed, try rescanning)

your bookmarks are searchable only by the title, i believe. which
seriously limits the usefulness of the plugin. there's some talk over
on the quicksilver boards (at least there was recently) about creating
a del.icio.us plugin that would search tags also

Something you may find useful for keeping track of your tags, as well
as seeing how other people have tagged something, is using the
nutr.itio.us post instead of del.icio.us's own post. information is
here:
http://supergreg.hopto.org/nutritious/nutritious.php
Whenever you bring up the post window, along with the fields you get in
the del.icio.us post, you also get a list of commonly used tags for
that page, flagged by popularity, and a list of your tags, also flagged
by how often you use them. You also get tag history and a couple other
features, but those are the two I use.

I also find it helpful to have a tag that's a holding place for new
bookmarks. when browsing and I can't decide how to tag something, or
don't have time to read a page at the moment, i throw it in there.
then, later, when i have free time at the computer, i'll go through
that tag and read and file everything. give my brain a little time to
work on what tags to use without me getting in the way

Hmm... I've got del.icio.us installed, but when I choose modules I just
get "Shelf" and checking that, it only shows my del.icio.us
bookmarklet, nothing else.

Insofar as I know, my login/password is completely correct.

Any ideas?

Sounds like you're looking in a different place...

From Quicksilver's menu, choose "Preferences..." or Cmd-, not the
"Modules" submenu
Picture: http://www.randomspaces.com/duien/qs1.pdf
In the preferences menu, there should be a list down the lefthand side
including "Appearance", "Application", etc. as well as preferences for
a few modules that have them
Select del.icio.us from that list.

If you're pretty sure your password is correct, have you checked the
catalog?

I've not tried out the plugin yet, but if you run delicious2safari (
http://tuxtina.de/software ) to, er, get bookmarks from del.icio.us
into Safari, organised into folders by tag, you can access the lot via
Quicksilver.

It's a shame delicious2safari doesn't have a scheduling option to make
it easy to keep bookmarks in sync, but it works for me.

At the risk of double-posting (my previous posting seemed to get eaten):

I have been getting 503 errors from del.icio.us all day. I assume
that's the reason why my newly-installed del.icio.us plugin isn't
working.

FYI, at least for me, my queries to del.icio.us are returning a 503
error. I assume this is the reason why my newly-installed del.icio.us
plugin isn't working either.

Re: the 503 error.. I hit that on and off for a couple hours this
afternnon. I don't think it was a misconfigured plugin since I haven't
downloaded any of the plugins for it yet.
