Climate Change Day of Action meeting #2

Building on the success of events held over the last two years to mark the Global day of action on climate change, we are at it again...and would love to have you involved!

At the moment, we are dreaming of what December 6th 2008 might hold install as the Climate day of action.

Come to the Southern Cross Tuesday 26th August @ 6pm to join us!

Events happening around Wellington

Healing the earth and it's inhabitants from the ravages of industrial civilisation
A film screening and discussion featuring the film: Endgame -A talk by Derrick Jensen

Friday 15th August, 7pm (1 hour film followed by discussion)
at 128 Abel-Smith St, Te Aro.
Free entry (koha appreciated to help cover projector hire)

"We are members of the most destructive culture ever to exist. Our assault on the natural world, on indigenous and other cultures, on women, on children, on all of us through the possibility of nuclear suicide and other means--all these are unprecedented in their magnitude and ferocity."

Why do we act as we do?
What are sane and effective responses to outrageously destructive behavior?
What will it take for us to stop the horrors that characterise our way of being?

In this film of a 1 hour lecture, Jensen examines the premises of his controversial book, Endgame, offering both a perfect introduction for newcomers and additional insight for those already familiar with his work. Whether exposing the ravages of industrial civilization, relaying humorous anecdotes from his life, or bravely presenting a few of the endless forms that resistance can (and must) take, Jensen leaves his audience both engaged and enraged.

Wellington Climate Action Festival 2008 December 6th

First planning meeting for 2008, The Southern Cross Bar, Tuesday 19th of August, Starting 6pm.

Over the past two years Victoria University's Student Environment Group and others have been organising climate action festivals that co-incide with the International Day of Climate Change Action. This year this day is December the 6th. This coincides with intergovernmental negotiations for a climate treaty.

The aim for global actions:

“We demand that world leaders take the urgent and resolute action that is needed to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate, so that the entire world can move as rapidly as possible to a stronger emissions reductions treaty which is both equitable and effective in minimising dangerous climate change.

Last year we managed to succeed in holding a large event in Wellington's Civic sqaure attended by around 2500 people. This year we would like to see this event grow to have a greater impact for Wellington communities. We welcome you to come to The Southern Cross Bar on Abel Smith Street (just down from Real Groovy records) at 6pm for dream up what this event could look like this year. Also a substantial funding grant has already been lodged with the Wellington City Council so we are prepared to get the resources we need.

My challenge to you over the next week is to imagine an event that could profoundly impact Wellington communities and the global community that creates action for the climate.

To seek inspiration follow these links; this is serious, we can inspire and we can have fun!

Interested in intentional community?

Ron and Leanne Eckman have designed a weekend to explore the possibilities of intentional communities and to share with you our vision for creating one. This is not a training course. This weekend is open to those wanting to or considering living in an intentional community.

9 & 10 August

Waihoanga Centre

www.waihoanga.co.nz

NOTE: please register by 21 July. See below. Places are limited if you are planning on staying at the centre.

An intentional community is the term used to define a group of people who share a piece of land, who plan the design of their dwellings in an environmentally friendly way and who share values and principles about living in community together.

This is a helpful site about intentional communities: http://www.ic.org/

There are over a thousand intentional communities around the world. For example, Findhorn, in Scotland, is well known for pioneering sustainable living. An international network of intentional communities has already developed a wealth of knowledge - from experience - about what works in an intentional community and what doesn’t work.

This weekend is a great opportunity if you are at the point where you are interested in exploring the possibility of living in an intentional community.

The intended outcomes for the weekend are:

O    To share with you our vision

O    To experience being in community with others

O    To explore what an intentional community is

O    To explore the possibility of living in one

O    Being with others of similar mind and heart

Wayne and Jenny, hosts of the Waihoanga Centre, generously offer us the use of their centre in support of our vision to create an intentional community. Koha accepted.

There is no cost to attend the weekend. Just bring your open minds and hearts and food to share.

To attend the weekend, contact Leanne eckman@xtra.co.nz or (04) 387-1747. There is a registration form to complete and some pre-reading to do to prepare yourself for the weekend. Please register well in advance.

With open heart,

Leanne & Ron Eckman

E-day 4th October - drop off your e-waste safely for recycling -

eDay is a community based initiative designed to raise awareness of the hazardous nature of electronic waste (e-waste) and to provide a safe and accessible venue for households to dispose of old computer equipment and mobile phones.

Last year 2,243 cars drove through the stadium carpark dropping off 150 tonnes of equipment in Wellington (after final weights were taken).  At least 95% of this was diverted from landfill and either re-used or recycled in a fully accredited environmentally sustainable way.   This year we are expecting even greater volumes as the understanding and popularity of this event grows.

Organised nationally by the Computer Access NZ trust (CANZ), the website www.eday.org.nz will be updated with information for this years eDay to be held on Saturday 4th October in Wellington.  This providean opportunity to highlight information on the problem of e-waste and map out ways to reduce the impact on our environment. CANZ are the national steering committee and are also embarking on nationwide media advertising and communications campaign to further raise awareness of the issues.

Volunteers Wanted for E-daY : message from event organisers

On a local level, we are able to have a free eDay in Wellington through collaborative efforts of local volunteers, businesses and the City Council.   A key need for us is volunteers to work on the day (4 hours either in the morning, afternoon or after the event).   We are hoping that your business can help by providing a group of volunteers.   The tasks include taking the equipment out of people's cars, carrying out surveys, traffic management and stacking equipment for transport.  We have a health and safety plan and will provide training before hand and/or on the day depending on tasks.

In return for your valued time and effort , we  will provide

    • free lunch and refreshments for all volunteers
    • an opportunity to promote the contribution your business is making through banner space at the venue
    • a chance for your business to walk the talk towards being sustainable

We believe your support will help make this event even more successful than last year, and help Wellington's eDay towards our goal of being recognised by the Guiness World Records as the biggest of any of these events in the world.  Last year the Wellington eDay collected almost half of the equpiment that was taken nationally.

For further information, please feel free to contact me or visit the eDay website at www.eday.org.nz

After two successful events at Midland Park on Lambton Quay, Downtown EcoTherapy (DET) is making its way Rutherford House.

DET uses soy and milk cartons collected from over 35 cafes around Wellington to pot up native seedlings to enable them to grow larger, in preparation for planting by volunteers on Wellington's South Coast. THE FREEZE...

New Zealand is hosting World Environment Day on June 5 and I want you to Freeze. Yes, like an icicle with limbs.

What?     Freeze en masse in a public space for 5 minutes
When?    Thursday June 5, 12:30pm
Where?   Surprise! Read on
Why?      To celebrate World Environment Day / encourage people to stop and reflect for a few minutes / maybe you just want some fun.

There have already been big freezes elsewhere in the world. This is the first in the southern hemisphere, so lets make it big! For inspiration, check out:
New York: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwMj3PJDxuo
Paris: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtUNj2BNTsU

Freeze mid-stride. Freeze with a pie. Freeze falling over. Freeze on your bike. Freeze in a hug. Freeze how you like.

We're freezing together in Wellington's central city. To find out the location:
-  RSVP to MrFreeze.NZ@gmail.com with "I'm freezing" in the subject line to be notified a day before the freeze, or
-  Check http://intersect.ning.com/events on the day.

Lots of people - young and old - are already excited about being part of this freeze. Now share this whisper with the wind: tell all your friends to come too.

Till then, keep your mittens handy. It's almost winter, folks.

Yours,
Mr Freeze

PS: I won't share your details if you RSVP. My friendly helpers in New Zealand are Good Honest People and MrFreeze.NZ@gmail.com will be permanently frozen immediately after the event.

Connect - ReConnect

In March 2008 Vic Earth, a group of Victoria University students
interested in social and environmental sustainability, held the
inaugural Connect event.  This was a chance for campus-based social
and environmental groups to connect with the wider Wellington
community of organisations and individuals working in the context of
sustainable development and change. A second event was held in May 2008
hosted by Transition Towns that focussed on ideas for World Environment Day

I'm sure everyone involved will agree that the Connect events were a great success
- thanks heaps to Vic Earth and Transition Towns for organising them and to everyone who
participated.

To build on the momentum that the events generated, we at 42collective
thought it would be great to host a discussion forum.  This can be
used by all the groups involved - to stay in touch, discuss ideas,
motivate one another and most of all to build on the enormous pool of
energy, skills and and resources that we all share...
