a Map Your World - 3D Modeling for Google Earth & Maps
I have a couple of questions about whether or not something can
already be done but I just can’t see the connection to make it happen.
I will use the town of McMinnville Tennessee for reference.

Question #1:

For a small town, McMinnville has a lot of models on GE. On the
McMinnville home page (http://www.mcminnvilletenn.com/) I do not find
a link that would take someone directly to the GE website where the 3D
models could be viewed. If there is not a link there is that something
that the city of McMinnville could add to their website. I have the
same sort of question in relation to Google Maps. If someone were
looking for McMinnville on Google Maps is it possible to turn on a
layer, as can be done for “Traffic” etc., and see the 3D models.

Question #2:

In McMinnville there is a Hardee’s restaurant. On Google Maps it is
easy to find and from the Hardees website ( http://www.hardees.com/ )
one can easily search for the restaurant “Location” in McMinnville and
likewise find it on Google Maps. Could a link be placed on the Hardees
website (they do not have a Hardees McMinnville website but if they
did maybe a link there also) to view the 3D model on GE and/or on
Google Maps? I know that at the 3D Warehouse McMinnville and the
Hardees 3D Model can be found and from there one can elect to view the
model on GE or Google Maps.

If the above cannot currently be done are there any pros/cons related
to such being done?

Are my questions unclear or should I post them on a differant forum?
If unclear please let me know and I will try to clarify. If I should
post the questions to a differant forum please suggest where. Maybe
these are questions that can only be answered by someone at Google. If
the questions can only be answered by someone at Google I will call
them if someone will give me the best number to call.

A responce will be very helpful and appreciated.

Hi blair1,

Anyone is free to link to 3d buildings at 3d warehouse and Google
Earth from any website, no matter if the website is run by an
individual, organisation, governmental body or commercial venue. At
the moment Google doesn't charge for that service but instead is
encouraging people to map and populate the world in this way.

Feel free to promote your town's buildings, services and businesses by
linking to their 3d models.

Although it is possible to place 3d models as KML files on Google Maps
there has no 3d layer been introduced so far.

Regards,

Lorenz

a Map Your World - 3D Modeling for Google Earth & Maps
Hello Blair,

Users have the *option* of adding a link (in addition to other
metadata) when publishing a model to the 3D Warehouse. People use
those links differently. McMinnville included a link that directs the
user to their "Downtown McMinnville" web site. If McMinnville wanted
to users who visit that site aware that models of their town buildings
exist in Google Earth, there are two options:

1. Post a KML tour on their website (if a visitor has Google Earth
installed, it would launch Earth and fly them to McMinnville)
2. Integrate the Google Earth Plugin on their website (this approach
is preferred since the user could interact with their buildings
without having to install the Google Earth client.)

Regarding Maps... Google Maps does not have the same content layers as
Google Earth (eg. "3D Buildings"), so it's not possible for someone to
see 3D buildings of McMinnville in Maps. Maps is 2D.

Regarding your second question, the answer is the same as above.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Bruce and Lorenz for the helpful information.

Lorenz
I do not have a website to experiment with and have no connection to
Hardees only use them as an example because there is a McMinnville
Hardees model at 3DWH. I assume you are saying that from a Hardees
website they could use the link below to the link someone to the 3DWH
website to see the model if they wanted to. I know noting about
creating websites but if such is what you mean I assume such a link
could be done in such a way, on their website, that the link would not
be so lengthy. I am not sure a company would want to link to a model
of their establishment but maybe they would. I am just tinkering with
some random thoughts and trying to figure out what can be done to
piece some things together and if they might have any marketing
values. For a product I am sure there is value but for an
establishment I am not sure. Anyone have an opinion?

Bruce

Before your post I spoke with someone at “Main Street McMinnville” and
they directed me to "Downtown McMinnville" but they were shocked that
they had so much difficulty finding the 3D link because it was buried
so deeply in the website. As a result of our conversation, I am in
Georgia, they may make it more prominent. It seems to me that would be
good a good move. I have now looked at the Madison NJ site and they
have an interesting arrangement that begins to work better with my
mental tinkering. Please see the link below.

http://gov.rosenet.org/businesses/map

At that link one can select from “Find Businesses>Catagories:” then
“Tags>Bakery/Café” and the “Map/Satelite/Hybird” shows a marker for
“Atlanta Bread Co.”. A click on the marker will create a bubble where
one can click and see an isolated image of the Madison NJ Google Earth
model and also click to go to the Atlanta Bread Co. website. In total,
seems to me-Good Stuff! Expanded market value at that point *might be*
a link to the actual model, Google Earth etc.

I see what you are about “Maps” being 2D. What I should have said was
that from a MAPS if one switched over to SATALITE could the 3D model
show up so everyone could see the model as you can at 3DWH. Please
see the link below.

http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=e5e8d26a4ca1fddf39c99109a8a7597c&prevstart=0

At that link location if I click on “View on 3D map” I am taken to the
Hardees 3D model, on what looks like Google Earth, and see/find
Hardees. Is that not something that can be added to Google Earth “Map/
Satelite/Hybird” that the world sees without going to the 3DWH? One
thing I find interesting at the “View on 3D map” is that I can scroll
out, move around the earth then scroll into any point on the earth and
the detail is like I am on Google Earth. Heck, maybe I am on Google
Earth and don’t know it because it is on my machine or maybe the
integrated plugin you mentioned is doing this for me at the 3DWH
website.

Unless I am missing something it must be that the opportunity to see
3D models on the Google Earth “Map/Satelite/Hybird” has not happened
yet. Do you think it will happen and is there any known potential
value to it ever happening?

Your response was definitely helpful. I am closer to something but I
don’t know what other than more, for the moment, mental tinkering. If
any of this can be followed, makes since and you can share any other
thoughts please do. One other question, are some things here related
to API stuff?
