Also another strangeness - I've drawn a square (within the bit of GE my
model sits on) and extruded it to a cube and laid a texture on it. I then
draw a parallelogram on a vertical side of this cube like a diamond with two
sides in the vertical plane. My intention is to push/pull this shape out
leaving a hole in the cube but for some reason it doesn't cut a hole. The
lines join up okay but no hole is cut. I hover the push/pull tool over it
but the whole face is highlighted - inside and outside of the shape as
though it wasn't there.
Yet if I do that on a shape drawn OUTSIDE of the GE bit it works fine.

Once you have set an Axis (or more than one using Scenes for each
Axis), then your drawing tools should orient themselves to the
applicable axis/scene axis.
However, if you are finding that your tools Don't Follow the Axis (as
you have explained) ... Please check to make sure that the TERRAIN is
Turned Off.
The Terrain On/Off Button is beside (included with) the Google Earth
Toolbar.
Try that and let us know if that works.
As long as the Terrain is Turned OFF, the tools Should Follow your
axis.
