The problem shall be this model:
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=e5c53b651cfe36a2effdec25489da3a7

Several times I tried to upload the model to GE, but I always got the
answer “the model failed processing or something like this:

“Replace all the trees and shrubs with PNGs (this may have been what
caused it to fail) and
Eliminate shrubs with repeating textures (tall shrub wall) (this may
have been what caused it to fail)

It's a nice model and I'd like to see it in Google Earth, but there is
work to be done to make that happen.”

I don’t understand what it exactly means and so I do not know what to
do!!
Here my questions:
1. What are PNG’s and why are the better than my trees?
Can someone show an example?
2. What exactly is the problem with repeating textures?
I hope someone can help me!!

Thanks and regards

Hi fredygoog,

PNG phototextures are textures where the negative space (the
"background") is transparent. Your water fountain uses one of these.
An example of a .png tree is here:

http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=2c80a3ce580c6fd3fed1c92b77aaf3df

Since SketchUp "face me" doesn't translate to Google Earth, usually
people will take a single face 2D tree and replicate it rotated 90
degrees so that it looks more or less like a tree from all
directions. Fly to Disney World in Google Earth to see many examples
of this type. True 3D trees use many more polygons, resulting in a
model that is too complex for us to use. Your model has something
like 68000 faces; you'll need to get it down into the range of
5000-10000 to make it work. You can check this using Window->Model
Info->Statistics; make sure the "Show nested components" box is
checked.

Heavily tiled textures run into problems during the compression stage
of the Google Earth processing pipeline. Extremely heavily tiled
textures (tens of thousands of copies) will simply fail; there's a
limit on the allowed UV coordinate range. Somewhat less heavily tiled
textures will compress in odd ways, resulting in a very blurred model
in Google Earth. To get an idea of what the compressed texture will
look like, right-click on one of the tiled surfaces and Make Unique
Texture. The resulting blurry image is an upper bound on the
resolution that'll actually get used; if you have used the same
texture at more than one scale, it'll end up worse (sometimes *much*
worse) than that.

Good luck,

Allison

Hi Allison,

first thank you for the answer.
I'll think about your suggestions because you explained the situation
more fully to me and I'll try to change the model.

But I want to ask you one question directly!

The PNG-tree at the model you send me (http://sketchup.google.com/
3dwarehouse/details?mid=2c80a3ce580c6fd3fed1c92b77aaf3df) always shows
to the camera in Sketchup. That I did know, but it doesn't do so in
GE. Can I change it? If not, I think it's not a good tree for my
Model.
But I take pleasure in the trees of Disney World.

Thanks and regards

That's the Face Me issue I mentioned. SketchUp has this feature, GE
does not. You will need to create two faces on perpendicular planes
and paint the texture onto both of them. Here's an example from
pmolsen:

Hi Allison,

I have edit my model “Terrassengarten” (http://sketchup.google.com/
3dwarehouse/details?mid=d1ee58bfcc99f6bd70aa52a0323892db) and reduced
the faces from 68000 to 31071by changing the trees in PNG-images. I
think, it’s a good decrease and a good look.
Additionally I tried to correct the texture-problem, but after
uploading the model to the 3d gallery I got the answer “the model
failed processing”.
If I delete all tress then the faces are reduced to 29700. To get down
to 10000 I have to delete nearly the terraced region of the garden
completely and then the model doesn’t make sense!!
So I hope I didn’t see a mistake with the textures or any other one.
What do you think about my model, do you have a suggestion what to
do??

Thanks and regards

Hi Allison,

I found the elements, which caused the lot of faces. It were handrails
and bars.
Now the model has 8904 faces!!!!

I hope that the model will not fail now.

Thanks and regards
