a Map Your World - 3D Modeling for Google Earth & Maps
Hi Google team,

today I wanted to start modelling a building that was already modelled
by another user. The existing model is just one plain cuboid, which
doesn't do the interesting architecture justice at all. (Still it has
been accepted...) This is why I wanted to create a more realistic
model.

When I placed my blocks in BM and previewed the result I had to find
that the old version was still visible. No problem I thought - it can
be hidden. But to make thinks really bad, this old model left a black
mark on my model on those places where it was larger than mine.
Obviously the BM engine take the current model into account when
calculating which faces are visible (from which angle).

Is there anything I can do? Can you possibly add a switch to "not take
surrounding models into account" when applying the textures. I know
that taking them into account can sometimes improve the result, but in
this case it is disastrous. This is why I think it should be
optional.

Or do we just have to accept that, whoever builds a model first,
likely blocks any further attempts to model the same building?

P.S. My (of course very incomplete) building is here

This happened to my building too, at this location

This model replaced a model in Google Earth, which in turn replaced
someone elses model. It keeps getting rejected for incorrect
texturing, of course. Good luck, nice models!

Hi,

I'm having the same problem as well, how did you get it fixed?

Id did not get it "fixed", I just did one of several possible
workarounds, all of which include SketchUp.

Basically the idea is to use BuildingMaker for creating the geometry,
then load the model into SketchUp 7.1 (as described on the help pages)
and replace the faulty texures by correct ones (and by the way also
delete all those superfluous faces that are never visible in the final
model because they are below the ground or inside other boxes.

Of course, the challenge is to get the texture image(s) you need.
There are several ways:
(a) Create a box larger than the existing model, let the preview show
this "model" and grab the texture from it.
(b) Create a box larger than the existing model, save it to 3DWH, load
it into SU as well and grab the texture from it.
Then delete this temporary box model from the warehouse (!!!)
(c) Grab a screenshot from GE and use if, if it is the roof that is
involved.
(d) Grab a screenshot from BuildingMaker and accept that it will have
copyright marks on it.

I don't remember any more what I did, I think a or c.

Needless to say that this was a rather circumstantial procedure and a
real solution would be very appreciated.
