Hi everyone,
I was wondering what type of mask, if any, is recommended for lamp working. My work space for lamp working has a ventilation system. I would appreciate any information anyone has.
Thanks,
Kelly

Hi Kelly:
I have a couple of different pieces of equiptment I use. I have a nice
comfortable respirator that has replacable cartriges when I get serious
(when sandblasting, fuming and when using alot of enamels or powders) and a
simple mask (like one for a painter) that I use when I am just doing a
little of those things (or cleaning my studio!) I do not use any kind of
mask for just regular flameworking. There is some really good info on the
ISGB forum on safety and ventilation. www.isgb.org I figure my ventilation
system is good for combustion fumes, but when I work with powders, pixie
dust, enamels, etc I think a ventilator or mask is a good idea!

I am going to a glass wholesaler today and hope to find some interesting Moretti colors. Yesterday, I saw 3 new ones that they are thinking of producing: a lemon chiffon type color, a dark metallic color and this very interesting molted blue/gray (the class voted that one as their favorite).

And Fig, your ears should be ringing. Turns out several people have had classes with you! :-)

Ciao and hope to make the next open torch,

-Laurie

Congratulations on your work being choosen for the Gathering! You must be so happy. Could you please send me the brand name for the respirator that you use? Did you get the respirator and cartridges locally?  I would really appreciate any info that you can send me.
Thanks,
 Kelly

Kelly,

I purchased my respirator through Rio Grande. I don't suspect that anything is available locally.

There was a wonderful article in the Glass Bead a few years ago about respirators. The one piece of advice that stuck in my brain is that it's important to know what you are trying to protect yourself from and get the right respirator. When I bought mine, my primary concern was fumes from silver, gold and other metal fuming processes, so I bought a respirator according those needs.

Hope that helps a bit.

Take his ring class! You would love it and you could always borrow my ring mandrels. I believe it is the week before GAS. Let me if you are going to take the class, cuz I might need a big favor.
