does anyone have a working rep-rap or large bed printer in the area?

I have an object that is about 8x8x4 inches and has complex structure,
including steep overhangs and internal chambers. Certainly this is too
much for the cupcake or thing-o-matic. Are there any DIY printers out
there that can handle such builds yet? I imagine it would be a
challenge even for industrial printers.

Sicnerely,

Got a picture or stl of what it looks like?

MITERS over at MIT has a nice one, not sure of the bed size. MakeIt Labs in Nashua is building a Mendel.

Yeah I was considering the one at MIT; I'm not sure I can release this
STL or even a photo. It is a 7.5x7.5 inch bowl-like structure with an
internal chamber, some small ~2mm holes, and some considerable
overhangs, about 4" tall.

I told them to send it out to shapeways .. better resolution and more
material options.

If they are local and want to stay that way, they can contact http://www.empireprototype.com/ They're in Attleboro. They can handle anything you can throw at them.

I'll pass along that link, thanks.

I could use the 'bot in Miters, though I don't know if Charles wants
random people using that, I don't have a machine with the calibration
profile ( it looks to be makerbot hardware, but there is no computer
associated with it -- presumably Charles' laptop? ), and last I
checked the heated bed wasn't working, which is a slight hiccup in
printing large items. Its definitely consider it though.

Since this is someone else's project I'll probably just tell them to
outsource it rather than going through great troubles myself. More
curious about the hombrew printing capabilities in the area.
