Hi, I'm an Education Associate at the Museum of Science. We (the
Current Science & Technology team at the Museum) are developing a live
presentation about 3D printing that we plan to give daily from Feb 5
through 25.

It sounds like some of you do educational demos of 3D printing. Would
you be interested in presenting a demo on the Current Science &
Technology stage at the Museum? A possible time would be a Saturday or
Sunday at 12:30, sometime in the Feb 5-25 range.

I'd also like to ask if you know of anyone who could lend us a 3D
printer for three weeks. It would be wonderful if we could actually
demonstrate a 3D printer during our daily presentations. Or if we
don't actually operate it, we could at least have a real printer on
stage to show people an example.

Finally, we'd like to show some cool objects that have been 3D
printed, especially objects that would be hard to fabricate any other
way. It would be great to represent a range of materials that
different 3D printers can work with, including plastic, metal, and
organic/biological materials.

If you'd be interested in (a) doing a 3D printing demo at the Museum,
(b) lending us a 3D printer for 3 weeks, (c) lending us printed
objects for 3 weeks, or any combination of these, please contact me
soon at jsable at mos dot org.

Thank you very much! --Julia

Heya Julia,

If somebody wanted to donate a 3D printer to the MoS, would you guys mess with it for this 3 weeks then pack it off into the warehouse or might something less short-term take shape?

Just curious...

Hi Julia
I think we could gather up a collection of people to present, and several of us have more than one 3d printer.
This sounds like fun to me, and I would be happy to participate.

A donation might have a stipulation that it is on loan for as long as it is being used, and then returned.

Hello Julia,

I agree with Dave and Chris,

I'm in Charlestown, so if you want, I can swing over and talk about
this with you.

For me, later in the month is better than earlier for me, Chris and
Dave, how about you?

By the way, a group of us will be giving a 3-d printing demo at Room
68 in Jamaica Plain on Feb 2nd if you wanted to stop by, it'll be from
6pm till about 10pm.

Best,

Aaron Double

I was thinking more like that if they knew it was going to be used for more than a few weeks, maybe one (or more!) of the printer companies might donate a box to the MoS.. Even my beloved Ultimaker can be a bit finicky at times and Julia & Co would probably benefit a lot from the process of putting one together (less work that it sounds!) and such. I wouldn't dream of loaning somebody my old Cupcake for a few weeks (unless I didn't like them).

Of course, I know that's sorta signing the MoS up for more work so if they're not into it, that's 100% fine..

If they do get a loan or a donation, I'd be happy to help with configs or chat theory if schedules can be made to align..

Also, I have a 30 minute playlist of 3d printing videos on youtube
(mathisyourfriend42). I've found it helpful to have this going while
I babble on and on about what guests are seeing during a print. any
suggestions for new videos are welcomed.

about this also, someone by the name of Julia posted there asking if
anyone is interested, I replied, but have not heard back.

I would be happy to talk to you about this and can swing over pretty
much whenever you like since I live in Charlestown.

About doing a demo, I mentioned to Julia that I would be able to do it
more at the end of February than the beginning.

There are some concerns about loaning a printer to you for 3 weeks:

1. I use mine almost every day for prototyping and I am unsure if I
can live without it for that long.
2. The machines are still very finicky and get tuned by the owner to
their specific needs, means it is very hard and nerve-racking to hand
the machine off to someone else where it can get broken.

There might be some people in the local neighborhood that would be
fine with you borrowing one to show, but I would be surprised if you
will find someone willing to loan you one to use everyday.

Give me a shout and I'll run over with my printer and you can check it
out!

Weekdays aren't very good for me and there's some sports thing or something this Sunday.. How's Saturday afternoon? The following weekend might work for me, too.

I still need to do some bug fixing on my host controller - don't have a laptop so I either need to get that working (it mostly works now) or borrow a laptop with the right repg and such on it. Pretty sure I can make it work by this weekend.

Not sure what would be good to print for a demo.. Suggestions welcome..

Sadly, there's this big thing going on on Sunday that I care nothing about, which means that this is my annual snowboarding trip to Vermont:-(

I leave on Friday after picking my son up at daycare and come back on Sunday afternoon.

I thought the standard ulitmaker demo was the yoda, how about one of those?

I need to look into next weekend, something's nagging me in the back of my mind, but I need to check the calender.

Hey guys,

So, I went over to the MOS today with the cupcake and gave an impromptu talk on 3-d printing. It was fun.

Julie is looking for people that would be interested in demoing different 3-d printers on either Saturdays or Sundays though the month of February.

If you want to help, please email Julie at jsable at mos dot org and tell her that you are interested and when you would be free to help out. I personally will be free on the 25th. She has also been in contact with the local RepRappers... we might have to fight!    just kidding:-)

I was thinking something bigger, possibly shell-only so it goes quick.. The pink panther woman is also an Ultimaker standard but this is the MoS, not the MoFA, and I don't want Julia smacking me upside the head.

And leaving my Ultimaker behind. For a few weeks anyway. I've asked for the look-but-don't-touch plan while it's there. I'm not totally clear on what the arrangements are there but if you're going to be heading in, I may be able to swing by for a demo. These machines have come a long way (in resolution and speed) since Botacon.

Hopefully somebody else will be there to actually speak to interested visitors. Such things are reallly, really not my strong point...

I've got one running pretty well and will bring that. I hope to do a preliminary hbp during the day.
The one that isn't so happy is sending 255 readings from the extruder and/or platform.  It's been a while since I did battle with it, so my memory may be faulty on the details. I could have one of the seniors check it out and see in the morning.

I don't think there's really anything formal happening on Saturday - the 'official' start of the program is Sunday, IIRC. My plan is to setup, start printing, hang out and try to keep kids from losing/buring fingers or noses by putting them inside the machine while it's printing. Maybe answer questions and such.

Those wanting to swing by on Saturday and hang out or help me fend off curious kids are more than welcome. Or if you wanted to get up on stage and start talking that'd probably be cool, too.

Julia patiently explained the plan to me yesterday but, TBH, all I remember is that I show up at 2-3 on Saturday then play things by ear. I think the above's right, though. Probably. Maybe.

Dave Durant presented today. It went from just before 3pm until
closing (5:30 or so). I helped out a bit talking and answering the
audience's questions as best I could (who invented the 3d printer?
someone came up to me and said his professor claimed it was him, I
forgot the name, sam maybe?). It was really fun. Hard to guess the
total # of people who watched. They came and sat for 20-30 mins on
average. Total # was 125-150 in groups from 6 to 20 at a time. (Dave,
am I in the ballpark?). I'm up for helping out on sat or sun for the
rest of the exhibit. The staff said they could add a cart on stage
that would allow for 2 printers with laptops to run at once. >1
printer makes it much easier (and less stressful). I've presented
alone before and a failed print was my worst fear. Dave had a hiccup
that we passed around so people could see the inside (whistle). Dave
was great and the staff and audience seemed pleased. Nothing seems
very scheduled yet so anyone who's interested should contact Susan
Heilman: shei...@mos.org or Danbee Kim: dk...@mos.org to learn more/
schedule a demo.
Anything you want to add Dave?

Joe's being modest.. I brought my printer in and fired it up but he (thankfully!) did virtually all of the talking.

I did a couple hex lattices (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:10566), which I think is a cool demo object to watch printing and tried the whistle twice but it knocked the ball off, both times. :\  I think I'd turned up the extrusion a bit (lowered FPD) for something and had the whistle sliced with that instead of the normal flow rate - next time I'll get it printed. Also got a 1/2 sized bunny that SF says will print in 30 minutes, which I'd like to try. I loaned my printer to the museum so I can't test print it ahead of time..

Went back today and caught the official presentation by the MoS' MJ Morse - it was quite good! - but didn't do any printing.

Wait.. What??

Not at home with the relavent emails but I think it's MJ doing Sundays and Susan (Sean? Danbee?) doing Saturdays. The museum has a daily 2:30PM A/V-type presentation that goes about 20-30 minutes - no idea who's doing the weekdays.

Their page for this is at http://www.mos.org/exhibits_shows/live_presentations&d=5265 and the picture on the top is the stage. This is sorta right in the middle of the museum main exhibit hall - maybe a 20 second walk from the ticket gate.

The show officially started on Sunday, which is why Joe got to do all the talking last Saturday. Now that their schedule is running, I think the deal is that the museum staff (MJ, Susan, &c) will want to do their thing on-schedule and if we'd like to come before or after their show and talk or print or answer questions or whatever, that's cool too. IIRC, before is better than after on Sundays - not sure about Saturdays.

MJ had a number of very nice example prints (including ones from serious/commercial machines) which would probably take up 1/3rd of the table you can see in the picture. If two of us show up at the same time with printers, that table will be pretty full with printers and laptops - it'd probably be a good idea to make sure the laptops are stowed or something in time for the museum staff to start their presentation on time.

I've been feeling flu'y for the last couple days. Probably not going to know my weekend plan for this before tomorrow but will dig for the emails tonight and post the museum contacts for who to talk to for the different days. Pretty sure it's Susan on Saturday and MJ on Sunday.

No worries, Joe.. That's just my standard answer to most things..

I actually think this here thread is a good place to organize amongst ourselves. Less chance of people missing emails or having to repeat stuff to those that weren't on an email, etc.. Then again, I don't think the MoS folks are following this thread so once (if) we get organized, they'd need to get updated..

Excellent time all!It was nice to see Joe and Dave. Kelly's reprap was pretty neat, and it was great to meet her.

I liked the presentation that Danbee gave. It had good images and looked like it might be a decent way to explain these new technologies. One thing I've been looking for is a concise explanation of 3D printing and other fabrication tools. She wasn't sure if the slides were available for redistribution, but would look into it.

They encouraged us to participate in the exhibit on future days. During vacation week, they expect to get slammed with massive crowds, and are up for any help from us.

It appears that the way it works is they have a few scheduled presentations by museum staff, and we help warm up the crowd, gather an audience and make the subject more personal and real. It seemed like our personal experiences were appreciated by the audience. We also have some deeper knowledge in the subject since we've been active in the community (for at least a few months more than the museum staff).

Anyone else planning on being there tomorrow?
Is noon a good time to show up?

I agree with Chris. I've been 2x and it's really fun. The audience
is excited and it's easy to talk about something they (and I) think is
cool. I encourage anyone interested to check it out. Having >1
printer at a demo makes it easier on everyone. Kelly, Dave, Chris,
and Danbee did a great job. Aaron Double helped out by phone then
stopped by. I'm going up tomorrow to lend a hand and check out the
other demos. As far as the time to show up, I'm not sure. I hope to
be there by 1pm. I'll post a more definite time tomorrow.

The museum opens at ten I believe, I got there at 11 and wished I had more time to set up. The crowds are thinner early, so there's less time pressure.

It also seemed that they were up for pretty much any thing we were willing to do. It was very flexible.

I sent this to Jeremy also. I can't make it up to Boston today.
Sorry. Been trying to print this morning and I've got some gremlins
to find. I'll be watching the group this week to figure out next sat/
sun.

I'm going to email those involved also but I wanted to post that I'm
not available to help with the demos this weekend (2/18 and 2/19). I
encourage any group member to help out. It's great fun and the kids
are excited (and well behaved).

Hey everybody,

Didn't even realize this group existed. Found out about it in Dave's
comment on my post here:
https://plus.google.com/u/1/113358276319317182211/posts/aEGyE62JUeb

I found out about the Museum of Science 3D exhibit from Julia's email
here:
http://forums.reprap.org/read.php?113,109920

Maybe instead of New England RepRap and MakerBot Boston we should have
picked a more generic title with "3D Printing" in the title. :)

I wish I'd known you guys were presenting on the weekend - I'd have
loved to stop down. Not sure about my schedule for the weekend but
maybe I'll see you at one of these. I printed out and built a Prusa
Mendel (iteration 2) for the museum and gave it to them this Tuesday.
It still needs an extruder, but during the 2:30pm shows they're
basically using them as non-functioning props anyway so I figured I'd
add that for them after the 3 weeks was up.

I'm hosting a 3D printing party at my house in Methuen, MA on Sunday
February 26th, from 11am-5pm (we've got at least twelve people coming,
with 5-8 RepRaps printing. We'll order pizza mid-day and just have an
excuse to print all day and see each others' printers. Anyone who is
interested in coming, let me know. I'd love to meet more people from
the area who are into printing.

I've attended Makerfaire NY two years in a row now and this year I
plan on bringing at least one RepRap.

p.s. I and my friend Chris built Makerbot #325, which I used to print
the parts to my Sells Mendel (which I used to print the parts to my
Prusa Mendel IT2 and the Prusa Mendel IT2 that I gave to the MoS).

Hope to meet some of you at the museum!

Unless the rest of my work day here goes totally pear-shaped, it's looking like I may be able to make it in tomorrow, the 18th, at around 1:30 or 2:00..

If you do, here's a bit of free advice - that huge hanging monitor
thing actually has a control they can easily push to make it go up and
down. Ask them to raise it. :) I swung around too quick behind the
table today and smashed my head into the bottom of the thing and got a
huge gash on my head - lots of blood. Poor Danbee, she was blaming
herself (it was all my fault). Didn't find out that it could be
adjusted until later though. Doh.

Don't think I can make it in this weekend. Have fun!

I banged my head in that thing a couple times. No blood though... Didn't know it moved.

moved. little blood but it hurt. sorry, but sorta glad to see it
wasn't only me (as I'm feeling the dent in my head).

HA, I'm not tall enough to bang my head on it!

Actually, I want to find out who else wants to join me this upcoming
Saturday (the 25th).

I just recovered from a cold and feel great but my voice is destroyed,
It might be fine for Saturday, but if it isn't, I'm not going to make
a very good presenter.

Look forward to seeing both of you Dave and Joe,

Dave, you said that you would be there in the afternoon, care to be
more specific?

Joe, when do you plan to show up?

For me, I can be there all day, but then, I live 1/2 mile away.

At some point Saturday I'll stop by briefly to pick up the RepRap I
made for the Museum (so I can finish it.. they're more useful with
endstops and, oh, an extruder). Maybe I'll run into some of you -
always good to meet people in person!

They're sounding like the schedule is pretty full for Saturday afternoon and are interested in other times.
If anybody has other slots in the schedule, you might consider dropping by and presenting.

Probably 1:30 or so. Maybe 2:00.

I'm trying to weasel my way out of work this Friday and may be able to come in Friday afternoon, too..

This morning, I got an email from Julia asking if my students and I could come in. She sounded like anything ***other than Saturday afternoon*** would be great.
We're on break, so I don't have daily access to the students. I gave a sheet with contact info last week and left it up to them to work out.
