I was new to web programming when I started so I looked at Python and then PHP finding the PHP route a better starting point for my personal tastes. If you work with Microsoft products exclusively, then you'll want to write something in .net or ASP? I've also seen people using curl commands from the shell and then breaking the data up using unix utils for parsing into mail/calendars. My approach was to stick with Windows, but run an Apache/PHP/MySQL combo instead of embracing MS options. If the business grows we could move all my code to a full linux server without issues thanks to the software I'm working with having linux roots. Hope that helps a bit?
