Subject: [PRIVACY] Department of Homeland Security publishes list of
surveillance keywords after FOI request
To: "privacy blah lists.efa.org.au" <privacy blah lists.efa.org.au>

[The list reveals is rather broad and gives a glimpse into the extent
to which we are being watched. I wonder if a similar FOI request has
been/could be made to ASIO, and how much of it would be censored on
the basis of national security.]

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2150281/REVEALED-Hundreds-words-avoid-using-online-dont-want-government-spying-you.html

The Department of Homeland Security has been forced to release a list
of keywords and phrases it uses to monitor social networking sites and
online media for signs of terrorist or other threats against the U.S.

The intriguing the list includes obvious choices such as 'attack', 'Al
Qaeda', 'terrorism' and 'dirty bomb' alongside dozens of seemingly
innocent words like 'pork', 'cloud', 'team' and 'Mexico'.

Released under a freedom of information request, the information sheds
new light on how government analysts are instructed to patrol the
internet searching for domestic and external threats.

I'm sitting here eating star Burst's and drinking Voka Mudslide's, and I
do Recall one night when I was watching a Spammer from China Phishing
for Exposure of your sister's Bust. Later on I used Social media to chat
her up and attempt a Plot to Pork her, but she shut me down with a
Denial of Service, treating the whole Incident like I had the Plague or
Ebola.

Now either echelon is a load of Malware, or I'm about to get a Gang of
Artistic Assasins here, looking for my Juarez!

We ran to the sounds of thunder.
We danced among the lightning bolts,
and tore the world asunder

Remember the "jam echelon day" back in 1999 that resulted in nothing -
there were few media reports but no one really cared... Same thing
again.

Everyone on this list should already be well-aware of what the
"wiretaps" entail - even something as innocuous as "the lambs will go
to lunch at 12:30pm Tuesday" will get pinged, reviewed and flagged.

Which is why the terrorists don't use wired communications - things
are distributed in person by cd's, notepads etc.

So just as you'd expect, more erosion of regular people's
privacy/rights in the inane attempt of preventing terrorism (or, more
accurately, under the veil of protecting us from terrorism).

Even though it's a redacted list, full of (probably equally as banal)
unknown words, a simple browser plugin could stop these words being sent
out from a client. Kludge up something from a "kiddie-safe" filter in
an hour, add that word list to it, or just add them to your dictionary
as mis-spellings so they always get underlined. Too simple to avoid
that trap.

It would be awesome if bad guys were using facebook to plot these
crimes, I would love to think they are that stupid. Pity they are not.

Nah, I reckon they were after 2600-canberra! Back in the day, it was PO Box 248, Deakin West, ACT, 2600 :)
