Yep , I've been using Linux all year

After fooling with a number of distributions also went with Ubuntu

Still use XP for those rare times when I need to run a Win-app natively

Vista is not an option here...but I will have to at least give Win7 a

Strangely enough, having used Unix, Linux and Windows side by side for
decades, I would have to say that Windows is easier, more device
friendly, supports more apps that I use for play or business, and in 30
years of using computers I've never had malware of any type on my
Windows computers (or the Unix/Linux machines).

Thats because you're not the "average" user. You know how to keep your
machines patched up and safe. The average user dosent know .exe files
arnt safe to click on when they see teh bright & shiny in their emailz

You're wrong - the information on how to be safe online has been around
for more than a decade - most people get compromised because they CHOOSE
to be stupid and ignore all of the NEWS, Security, Friends, vendor
alerts...

If people took as much care about their computers as they do their
checking account 99% of the problems would not happen.

Linux is not going to save anyone in the wrong hands, which Linux is
'security by oblivion', as no one is using it, therefore, no one is
really after it.

We'll see what happens with Google, Chrome/Linux and the 'cloud' if that
ever takes off, because it's going to be 'Who let the dogs out?'.

I TOTALLY agree. My life is much less complicated using Linux. Linux
just works.

Well, it may be easier, in particular for the accustomed users and thanks
to the 3rd-party driver support for some devices.
Linux, however, can be like a swiss knife for data recovery and
recognition of unknown devices. It detects and uses hardware you won't
detect with windows, without specific vendor-supplied drivers.

Malware ... well, you may have a (linux?)
router/firewall/mailscanner/proxy sitting in front of your windows
machines? ;-)

For the rare mostly w0rk-related tasks that I can't do with linux

It's not that easy. There are many computer users
that will never get it. They'll never be able to
understand how things work because they're convinced
that computers are inherently too complicated for
them to understand. You know the kind... start
talking "computer" to them and it's a deer in
headlights. Sure, there's plenty of info out there
on being safe, but for a lot of people it means being
taught the basics before they could understand it or
know what to do with it. It's much easier for them to
buy their buddy a six-pack when the shit hits the fan.

Tech support seems pretty healthy...

Same would and will go for linux. It's no miracle, just some marketing
missing (for good IMHO).

That's part of it.

First off, let me say that I'm a Windows guy. I started out in the DOS
days, went to OS/2 and hung there longer then many. It took NT4/2000 to
drag me away.

I also believe that Microsoft's biggest enemy is their own monopoly.
Sticking with IE6 for so very long, and letting Vista out the door
rather then waiting for it's codebase to mature are what I'd call
perfect examples.

Monopolies don't work, you need competition to drive innovation. Heck,
even Firefox started to gain monopoly status (sure, it was technically
fighting with IE, but IE and Firefox are really going after different
market segments, do I'd argue that they were both monopolies in their
own areas rather then a duopoly), but skip ahead a few months and look
what has happened to IE and Firefox after some viable competition
(webkit, giving us Chrome and Safari) showed up.

In this respect, it really bothers me that Linux can't make inroads into
Microsoft's desktop market space, since doing so will ultimately create
better products on all sides. Apple has helped in this respect, but
again, their market segment is a bit different and they have no interest
in the corporate desktop world.

Hah, I am an old fart and used to go through logarithmic tables and
sliderulers, then there were the first red-7-segment battery-draining
unaffordable pocket calclulators and digital watches that stopped working
in cold weather ... then there was the c64 and the z80, cp/m, dos, gem,
early windows, hp pascal machines and hp-ux, xenix/sco-linux, aix boxen
... when I first set up a samba server for win9x, later domain logon
server for w2k and xp. Knowing the smb protocol is a lot more complicated
than let's say ldap/nfs (authentication/fileserving) and there are always
new pitfalls with each new windows version.

Win7 will work best with win7 on a network - or with 2008 servers. We have
to expect performance and interoperability issues communicating with XP
and win2003 servers, often enough rather hard to recognize when
applications throw mysterious locking-related errors ....

After all, firefox is depending on investors, amongst them are data-miners
like Google (consider the phishing/malware check done via Google, and
others) - IE is phoning home to Microsoft as well.
Chrome is out of the question :)
But then, here@w0rkplace we mostly use firefox for running oracle webapps
in the browser, still relying on oracle jinit - where since ff3.5.2 we
need to exchange the jvm.dll to make it work. Oh, it also works on linux -
without a jinit crutch ... and 64bit will definitely change things.
Ok, IE6/7 mostly crashes with jinit ...

They surely would like to sell apple hardware plus the OS to the big
players, but in fact Apple would create just another major monopoly with
enough sheep to follow :)

LOL, and the Dumocrats have had majority since 2006 and done nothing
with it - They can't even, with the current majority, pass a simple
health care bill because they know it spells their end when it fails.

All of America is still waiting on the First 100 hours to be completed

LOL - how is holding Obama to his promises, showing his radical
connections to Marxists, Communists, Racists, his identification of $300
+ Billion (His own words) in abuse/fraud in Medicare/Medicaid that he's
not doing anything about, considered racist by ME - Don't you mean Obama
is a racist crook?

LOL, you mean he is suppose to clean up the decades of shit that was
laid down before he got there? It's Obama's fault that the US is totally
fucked-up and a hypocritical country and it's his fault?

You're going to hold him accountable for the US becoming a 3rd world
country with the have(s) and the have not(s). He did it all to fuck-up
the US that is already fucked-up, before he got there.

So, a person, just happens to be Obam, says they've identified hundreds
of billions in fraud, waste, abuse, and you want to allow him a pass on
giving the details to stop that abuse because he's Obama and it's been
going on for a long time?

I'm going to hold him accountable for claiming he's found hundreds of
billions in fraud, waste, abuse, and then keeping that information
secret and doing NOTHING to change it.

By announcing it to Congress and the world at large. Brilliant strategy
for secrecy.

> and doing NOTHING to change it.

That *you* know of, so far. Although he did also announce how he would use
the savings.

In secret.

To Congress.

And the world at large.

So, there you have it. Leythos is going to hold Obama responsible for
keeping a secret that he explained in detail on national TV, viewed in
the US by over 30 million viewers by at least one creditable survey. Now
Obama is in trouble. We can only hold our breath and see what Leythos
will do next. Will he shoot off a scathing email to Glenn Beck? Will
Leythos put on his super-secret uniform (code named: pillow case)? Stay
tuned to see if the entire world ignores this stupid-shit Leythos and
passes the healthcare reform act or will the entire world come to it's
senses?

You're lying - he didn't provide ANY DETAILS, he also lied according to
the politicians that are having to re-write their bills this weekend to
exclude Illegal Aliens....

Obama, since he's had this information on the fraud, waste, abuse, has
not handed it over to the agencies yet - if he had we would have read
about it already....

Do tell us something about the corruption and abuse in Medicare and
Medicaid that has NOT already been exposed by previous investigations
and nothing was done. Your point is moot, and totally somewhere out in
left field.

I hardly consider you someone to judge if anyone is thinking. You've
already shown that you went back for second helpings of the Rush
Limbaugh Kool Aid.

Must you start every post with "LOL"? Has the Limbaugh Kool Aid got that
much loco weed in it? You know you appear to be a dolt. Keep on posting,
you're helping the cause.

LOL, what does this have to do with anything Leythos Limbaugh? It's
guilt by association now, huh? Why don't you toss the Rev. Wright in
there too while you're at it? I see a little McCarthy-ism and
Limbaugh-ism going on here with you.
