Is it possible to use a webcam as a security camera?

We are having problems at the company I work for and I have been asked if I
can install a webcam that can be used as a security camera and linked to a
PC in one of the offices. The only problem is that they only come with
about 1.5m of USB lead and wouldn't reach the PC. So is it possible to cut
the USB lead and join a length in-between the two to lengthen it? And if so
how long can you make a USB lead until the signal isn't carried or too far
degraded? Or is it possible to purchase USB extension leads?

Any advice or examples of previous attempts at this sort of thing with a
webcam would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Smithy

Try X10.com, I think they may have wireless. The maximum length of a usb
cable is 16.4 feet unless you use repeaters.
You can try contacting a local security company and see what options they
offer, I have a friend in the business that does this sort of thing all the
time on both long and short term basis. Some companies only contract until
the perp is caught, others want ongoing monitoring and recording.

Purely out of curiosity.
Where does the law sit on this (in your part of the world)? Do you need to
tell the employees what you are doing?

I'm not sure about the laws, I'm in the UK. But the employees will be told
about it.

USB maximum is about 15 feet. X10 has crap software. Take a look at my site
http://www.seedsv.com/svseries.htm the Sharpvision series is top of the line
and affordable. You can watch, record, and manage the system from home and
view it from anywhere using any internet connection.

It's ok now. I have found a site that does 5m USB extension cables with
built in signal repeaters that can connect up to 25m of cable (approx 75
feet). But I am interested in your products, the Sharpvision page that you
sent me to, is that product just software or does it include
cameras/hardware. Do you have distributors within the UK that I can buy
from and how much does it cost?

I have found a site that supplies USB extension leads that will allow me to
connect up to 25m of cable (75 feet) as the cable has built in signal
repeaters.

What I want to now is are there any webcams that are wall mountable for
sale, preferably within the UK.

look for an ip cam i think dlink makes one and it runs on an eiternet
connection and has the same distance as running a network machine on a hub
or router typically hundreds of feet...with an ip cam you can login from
anywebsite to monitor it and set up passwords for access. much more
professional installation....check ebay too

I believe that most of the Logitech Cams have the threading on the bottom
for a universal mount.

Why not go wireless? Then you can walk around with a PDA as a monitor too
and hide behind the corners.
