Without having to explain how I got into this fix, can you make XP
forget that you were trying to use a monitor as the second monitor?

After re installing XP with 2 monitors plugged in, I have an LCD
monitor set as the default monitor. If I unplug the LCD and plug in
and old CRT monitor it does not display because XP expects it to be
the second monitor.

Did you try Control Panel> Add & Remove Hardware?

It is working now. Other than rebooting, I didn't change anything. I
had Googled that people were having trouble changing the monitor IDs.
Removing one and rebooting was the answer for me.
