Had 35mm negative pictures developed and printed at same
time a CD-Rom was made, there were 24 pictures on CD-Rom
each pix on CD is huge 650mb some larger. Sending them all
at once with email is impossible, once had 99 % sent it then
timed out after nearly two hours.

I used WinZip and compressed the files but it is not much different
the files do not seem to be compressed that much and it also
seems to take forever to send.

What am I doing wrong is there a special utility to compress pictures
from a CD or is there some other "right" way to send pictures by email.

thanks in advance

Denny,

The pictures you are thinking to send via email are much, much too large.
You should consider using something like Irfanview
http://softwarecenter.net/irfanview ) and resize them to about 640X480
pixels before tryng to send them. Besides the obvious problems with size,
when you resize them this way you will improve the quality of them.

If the pictures are in JPG/JPEG format, they are already compressed
and WinZip cant compress them any further.

If the pictures were in JPEG / JPG format, then they are already compressed,
as this is a compressed graphic format.
To reduced the actual size, you could reduce them using an art package (so
when viewed, the images are say 50% smaller).

Nice one Sherlock.

Eliminate the impossible and whatever's left, however improbable, is the
truth.

Alternatively, if you're not lucky enough to posess a mind capable of
logical thought, try double checking what you've read before coming out with
a smart arse comment - it'll save you a lot of embarrassment.

The images that are on your PhotoCD are *massive* - this is done
deliberately to fill the CD - if they give you small pics, and you want to
print them out A3, you'd be disappointed with the result... so they provide
you with massive images and leave it to you to scale them down to a suitable
size... why bother having small when you can have big for the same price? :)

For printing, use the images on the CD... for emailing, resize them to
640x480 and save the new images to your hard disk.

Incidentally, you can also reduce the quality of the JPG... there's an
option to do this in most decent paint programs... try it at 70% - you'll
not notice hardly any difference and it'll reduce the filesize considerably.

Can't be 650mb each. Impossible. More likely 650k each. Still quite
large using dialup modem. Anyway you can copy them to your HD and
rightclick each one and choose properties and uncheck "read only"
attribute. Any file burned onto a cd becomes "read only" by
default. Then using an image program such as Graphic Workshop or
similar program resize the photo to say 640x480 and save it as a jpg
entering 75 for the quality/compression factor. Of course when you
edit a jpg file and resave it you will lose some info/quality of the
image but it should be fine for email, web, etc. This shoould bring
down the file size from 500k to under 100k. Not a math major here but
you get the idea, I hope.

A "laserdisc burner" can fit 15GB of data ono a CDR? And there was me
thinking you knew fuck all.

And leave my arse alone ya bandit - take yer grief out on your monkey.

Hey, mush, my point was that he should try reading between the lines instead
of pulling someone up on what they've typed.

It stands to reason that the files aren't 650MB each, so either he's saying
that there's 24 pics on each CD, and some CD's are even bigger than 650MB or
that each pic is around 650K... either way the concept isn't too hard to
grok is it?

If Spongebob reckons the guy actually has 650K image files, why not just say
that along with an explanation, instead of simply saying "uh... you're
wrong" ?

Regardless of size, the guy wants the pics reduced to make them easier to
email... like i said, there was no need for daft comments when this group is
/meant/ to be for helping people.

This is called " back peddling"..I have heard of this before..you do it
nicely.........you were the one having trouble trying to "grok"..have a nice
day...

Hi "nut" , I am sorry for the computer rage I created due to a typo,
it should read 650kb. Specifically each picture is as follows in kb,

Properties of each pix gives me these readings.

844kb,851kb,588kb,718kb,593kb,596kb,784kb,717kb,699kb1.24mb,1.21mb,828kb,
800kb,655kb,672kb,563kb,693kb,603kb623kb,512kb,518kb,533kb,664kb,719kb,673kb
.

Total properties of cd gives me 61.1mb

I am a novice at emailing pictures to my family on another continent. It was
the first time
I had a cd made when I had my 35mm prints developed , I knew I was doing
something
wrong thus this posting.

I never intended my typo to be the cause of people being insulted
and apologize for my typo error

thanks kindly

If you would like to keep your pictures as they are you can use a file
splitter program like HJ Split, it's fairly popular. The person your
going to send them to needs the program to put them back together. You
can get it free from http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/

Make a folder on the harddrive to save converted images to
You can go here http://mindworkshop.com/alchemy/gwspro.html
and scroll down the page to DOWNLOAD for shareware version.
After it is installed, .open Graphic Workshop and click the wench
icon and goto formats and enter 70 or so where it says jpg/art quality
factor.
Now browse to the images on the cdrom and tag the ones you want to
send and click the "Scale" icon (box with diagional arrow on bottom of
it) and click "by size" and choose a size (640x480 is good) . Click OK
and then choose jpg. Then choose the folder you made and click That's
it. Note that these smaller files will not print nearly as good as the
original files. If the person you are sending them to wants to print
them then as Jerry suggested HJ Split is good way to send them,
although in the end they will still take the same amount of time to
send.
