I have got the error message "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close".

What will happen to Favorites? Have they been removed while uninstalling current version of Internet Explorer?

No. However, back them up first. Click File, "Import and Export..."
The reinstall will overwrite your IE files, not uninstall it.

Close all instances of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express
Control Panel | Internet Options | Click on the "Security" tab
Highlight the "Internet" icon, click "Custom Level"

* "Download unsigned ActiveX scripts = Disable // Was : "Download unsigned ActiveX controls = Disable

* "Installation of Desktop items" = Prompt // Item "Installation of Desktop items" not found on my computer

and see if it turns up anything ... although it could take more aggressive

this sometimes does occur. but you don't have to send the report. to get rid
of this menace go into the control panel>>administration>>services and
disable the service for problem reporting.... its not at all needed
