I bought a new PC which came with a 128 solid state hard drive with windows
7 prof loaded and a few other programs but was surprised that 40 gigs was
already taken up out of the box..... so I was wondering if solid state hard
drives store information in larger sectors than normal

THats likely the "Restore" partition for Windows and all the bloat-ware
the PC came with. It's probably "write protected" as well.
