I'd give her one.
Saw her on X-Factor tonight, looking goooooooood.

Half a bee, philosophically, must ipso facto half not be. But half
the bee has got to be, vis-à-vis its entirety - d'you see? But can
a bee be said to be or not to be an entire bee when half the bee is
not a bee, due to some ancient injury?
You're kidding, right?

Possibly because she's a world-famous star who has had multiple top ten
singles in both the US and UK (among multiple other Latin and not-so-Latin
countries) since the 90s. How the hell anyone couldn't have heard as much
as her name in the last fifteen years is totally beyond me. Do you live in
a box in the middle of nowhere with no music, no radio, no TV, no
newspapers?
> And no, not the most

She's one helluva sexy mover, though.

I agree, but the whole package floats *my* boat :-)
> Unattractive in that fake Hollywood way.
She is quite naturally attractive without all the frippery. Another one
like that is Christina Aguilera.
Have you heard of *her*, I wonder?
You Americans have this way of pigeonholing musical genres. Here in the UK
most of the more listened-to national radio/TV stations just play *music*,
all genres.
For instance, I have the radio on all day. During the week I listen to
www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 , at weekends to www.bbc.co.uk/radio2 . Radio 2 has
ashow on a Saturday between 1300 GMT and 1500 GMT that might take your
fancy, and another 'Johnny Walker sounds of the seventies' on Sunday
afternoons from 1500 GMT which you also might have a taste for.
BTW how do you classify 'classic rock'? Musical definitions like that are
lost on me as my taste in music is pretty catholic, ranging as it does
from classical to hip-hop and beyond.
I became a big Eminem fan around 2000 and got all of his albums as they
were released. My daughter, who was 12 at the time, wasn't into it. By the
time she was 14, I could never find any of my Eminem CDs. Guess who had
them :-)

I won't listen to some unhappy punk screaming to a drum beat. It's NOT
music. It's noise.
Just as well. Eminem don't like the homos, so you'd
just be gettin' yer feelings hurt and trying to killfile
him into some virtual resentment baggage device of yer
own diabolical design... and then drink and smoke away
yer woes until you wither-up, choke-down and cease activity -
like a tired, used-up old flathead WWII-vintage Jeep.

Nah..not at all.
I remember back in about 83 or so I was on CQ duty at the barracks
playing pool with a couple of the guys. Wheel Of Fortune was on they
were gushing over Vanna White. I always thought she was so so at best
and they went nuts...claimed she was the most beautiful woman in the

Then again one claimed I was spoiled because my wife was beautiful.

That /was/ a fun song. But generally, shameless sampling
(without which there would be NOTHING), boring drum machines,
and moronic lyrics, whoever does them, are no fun and are not
songs.
I own the first Snoop Doggy Dog album, and in spite of finding
him and his "style" (especially the current version) quite
repugnant, I enjoy the music. It's not a bad album. Some early
rap music had a lot of significant socio-political content, even
though it still hardly could be considered musically advanced or
even amusing, but it is all about nothing now.
AFA as Eminem, I don't know whether he or Vanilla Ice is more
embarrassing. And whatever "best album ever made" review any
Beastie Boys album gets, it's still shit.
And (I know they're not rap, I am changing subjects) I saw
Nirvana when they opened for Sonic Youth BEFORE Dave Grohl was
the drummer and they were B O R I N G as H E L L. Cobain is the
most overrated "alternative" rock personality ever. Dave Grohl
MADE the band. (Sorry, I just HAVE to bring that up whenever
someone mentions Nirvana. Great band name, horrible band.)
And, FWIW, I consider Fergie ugly as hell and her "band"
terrible. Their new album was also recently reviewed as
"stunning", IIRC. Fortunately, I have not heard anything from
the record and even better, since I stopped watching TV 3 years
ago, I have not seen any videos.
Whenever Fergie's fat ugly mug appeared on the screen, I always
switched the channel anyway. At least Lauryn Hill from the
Fuckees was really beautiful, even though the music was awful
and no one would have ever heard of them if they didn't go the
surefire route of getting into the top ten - a remake of a HUGE
hit from the past. Pathetic.
Ms. Hill's more recent achievements give a bit of a clue as to
her real talents:
http://howard53545.wordpress.com/2007/07/01/so-sad-public-
meltdown-of-lauryn-hill-continues
and if you can handle it...
http://ginavivinetto.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/lauryn-hill-
clown11.jpg
She just canceled a European tour. If you get to the top too
fast, it's a steep drop... Sad, really.
Anyway...
How ANYONE ever could ever consider Vanna White anything but a
robot (brain compiled using software of that period) with about
3 lbs of makeup on her face is beyond me.
Getting back to the start of the thread, Shakira is at least a
real musician and looks better than most other comtemporary
female singers, but I prefer Anasol, even though her music is
pap. (I know you haven't heard of her.)
Generally though, just like no woman really looks like how she
does on magazine covers, most singers can't sing at all. The
ones that can often have absolutely no brains and choose - or go
along with - material that should have never been written in the
first place.
We should all be applauding the retouching (I refuse to use the
word photoshoping) artists and the audio software
designers/technicians who can make Britney Spears sound like she
can actually tell the difference between an F and an F sharp.
Speaking of which, I heard the demo which the author of Toxic,
Cathy Dennis, a truly beautiful woman and a great songwriter who
put out two fantastic albums in '89 and '92 recorded for Ms.
Spears "to work from", and I (and not only I) have /grave/
doubts as to the identity of the real singer on the final
"Spears" release.

You guys should listen to some Boredoms, a Japanese band. Then
talk about shouting and noise.
The Boredoms make rap sound like Bizet's "Carmen".

Wrong, yo. Heres the data on where the samples were taken from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funky_Cold_Medina
This song contains samples from six songs, "Honky Tonk Women" by The
Rolling Stones, "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner (whose guitar riff dominates
the song), "Christine Sixteen" by Kiss, "All Right Now" by Free, "You
Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and the
introduction to "Get Off Your Ass and Jam" by Funkadelic (from which
the drum break during the song's bridge is derived).

Eminem brings rap to white rednecks and makes it accessable.
The Beastie Boys brought humor to rap that white kids could relate to.

Well, FWIW "HTW" was one of the last decent songs the Stones
did, I never heard the Funkadelic original, and the rest is
(IMO) horrid garbage - although stuff like "Christine 16" is
amusing in its own Ultra-American way. (WHY isn't Kiss playing
Vegas these days?)
Anyway, your knowledge of rap construction is impressive.
HOWEVER, /I said/ "But generally, shameless sampling [...]". I
thought it was clear I was talking about rap music generally,
NOT FCM which I /said/ I liked. While SOME rap songs use
sampling to a minimal or at least reasonable degree and use it
well, there are many that would not have ONE leg to stand on if
the sample did not basically create 99.99% of the musical
content of the piece.

Accessible.
White rednecks should not be a human race subgroup, they should
be extinct (with a few exceptions who are just really amusing).
So I reject that argument - it's a thanatoid world over here ;-)
Not that it's much of an argument anyway - it has nothing to do
with musical or artistic content, and all rap does for the
"rednecks" is give them more ammunition for their racism (BTW, I
know not all rednecks are racists, and many Massachusetts
residents are, etc.).

The grunge scene was NOT invented by him, he just happened to be
from the place that SOMEHOW spawned it. I lived in Vancouver at
the time so I was right there, or very near where it all
started. There were MANY /much/ better bands than Nirvana, who
as I said I saw before they made it big, and they SUCKED. And
they probably made it more because of Kurt's cute cashmere
cardigans than anything they had to say - which wasn't much. I
WILL admit the video for "SLTS" is quite fun and verges on
excellent, but that's all they were to me - a one hit wonder.
And I didn't like punk because of the way they dressed or acted
- I liked the music. At least they looked cool, too. Grunge:
Looking as bad as possible and playing boring music. That's not
much of a movement, at least for me.
IOW, I certainly /don't/ miss grunge, let alone would allow it,
by the farthest stretch of imagination possible, any status as a
"movement" of any significance, social or musical. All it did
was boost business for lumberjack shirt makers and drive many
dry cleaners out of business.

I would sure hope that was 100% understood, I engaged in the
discussion because since I have no one to talk to I like to
stick it to Cobain once in a while, even if it's on the Usenet.
I DID enjoy the pogoing (which I was doing in 1973, although in
bell-bottoms - I know, I know, I was young...) and the skirts
Novoselic wore once in a while. One of my best friends is a good
friend of his. I understand he's raising sheep now (or goats,
whatever).

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones is a minor
masterpiece.

I'll check that one out. Thanks for the heads-up.

I've just listened to it. Clever lyrics, if a trifle sugary. It's of the
type of song I call 'snuff songs'- Tell Laura I Love Her, Terry (by
Twinkle, a UK early 60s hit) Old Tige by Jim Reeves and other songs where
someone or something croaks. Even 'My Grandfather's Clock' would fall into
that category, if only peripherally :-)
That said, I'll definitely play it again. I did get a visceral reaction of
sorts.
Any idea what year it was released. The Usual 'snuff songs' were all early
to mid-60s, when there was a spate of them, for some reason the boy was
more often than not called 'Johnny'.
Released in 1980, and written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putmanthe it
was Jones's first #1 single in six years .

(chuckle) Yes, that WAS a popular name...
Wiki:
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" is a song by country music artist
George Jones that has been named in several surveys as the
greatest country song of all time.[1] It was a single on the
album I Am What I Am. Released in 1980, the song was Jones's
first #1 single in six years. The melancholy song was written by
Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman.
I am AMAZED it is so recent. I thought it was from the 60's!
I guess /classic/ country doesn't change that much.
So what do you think about "the greatest country song of all
time"? I really like it, but I'm no country expert.
Cheers, mate. I suppose I could have found out myself, but at the time I
was being an bone-idle fucker. :-)

'Johnny, Remember Me' and such like. They always bring awry smile to my
lips, for some reason.

Thanks for digging that up for me. I was in indolent mood last night.

As I said before- I wouldn't describe myself as totally bowled over, but
it can be future bubble gum for my ears when I'm in the mood for some easy
listening.
