Can I stop sent newsgroup messages from being saved in the sent folder?
Im tired of going thru them and weeding out the news and deleting.

In OE, go to Tools, Options, Send tab, uncheck "Save copy of sent messages
to the sent items folder"

That will also stop outgoing mail from being saved!
I want to save sent mail, just not sent newsgroup posts

But, you Terra might not be entirely happy with that result.  OE save
sent is 'all or none' - it doesn't just 'unsave' news, it also unsaves
mail.

I would think you might want to handle it differently.  That you would
leave save sent functional and find a different efficient strategy for
'unsaving' or deleting some, but not all, of the saved items -- and/or
organizing the saved into folders.

Delete some, organize the rest into other folders, so that the saved
folder doesn't get too large or it can corrupt.

You can massively delete by organizing according to To which will
organize the news messages into groups for deletion or by Account which
will organize all of the news messages separate from the mail messages
because they originated from a different account, news vs mail.

You could also make message rules to perform the function massively for
you.

Get a different newsreader. Or set up a new identity for newsgroup use. Then
switch identies when you are going to email.

Leave your save sent operational.  Put an account column in your Sent
folder -- View/ Columns - check Account

Periodically go to the Sent, click on the account column to separate all
of your news sent from all of your mail sent, shift-click to select all
of the news sent and massively delete.

OE-QF will trim those sigs for you, whether they are the old bad OE sigs
or the new compliant OE sigs.  [Hmm.  I'm not sure about the old bad
ones, but his is new enough.]

I used it previously, but had problems with some of the other 'features'.
It's been so long, I don't remember what it was anymore. I may try it again
soon - I'm changing laptops - but it's not worth setting up anything new on
this old junker.

And the answer is ... it still saves in the sent folder for the default
email account.  Of course Evan was also pointing out that posting with your
real e-mail address is sure to draw spam.

Why should your email address have any bearing whatsoever on whether your
email client saves a copy of sent messages?

I'm sure that Evan didn't mean any such thing.  The advice about your
eml addy was 'generic' and had nothing to do with a solution to the
initial question.

IMO it has a memory leak or a buffer overrun problem -- but I don't know
how to properly diagnose it -- but I do know how to manage it.

It certainly has a lot of features I find necessary to help OE behave
itself -- I can't stand shortlines created by an editor's mismanagement
of EOL wraps and linelength 'growth'.

I think maybe the newest editor for OE has improved its bad behavior
which is/was the chief purpose of OE-QF, but I can't use that upgrade
patch because I'm not XP, so I can't check it out.

Maybe, but they didn't fix the sig problems (either sending OR replying),
top posting, etc. I'm used to it, so it doesn't matter too much.

Your version's sig is compliant, dash dash space.  OE never has trimmed
the sig.

I don't think OE 'causes' top posting - but it is 'geared' for TOFU
corporate email text over fullquote under -- and when an OE user has an
automatic sig enabled, then they are 'pushed into' top posting by the
cursor being at the top, followed by the sig, followed by everything
else.  Those are the same people who never leave the default
configurations.

If that same OE user would disable the automatic sig, the business of
the cursor being at the top is appropriate IMO, because that's where the
trimming should begin.  When they get everything trimmed and
contextually responded to, they can add a sig.  'Manually' click adding
the sig has a certain advantage, because one can choose from a bank of
sigs instead of having it automated.

With OEQF that whole business is taken care of - one can use the autosig
customized for which account is being used, as intended, and one can
have the cursor start at the top, which I do, [or even the bottom if
desired], and the 'relationship' between where the cursor is and where
the sig is are appropriate for trimmed contextualizing.

A great many of the things wrong with OE's behavior that offends others
have been managed by OEQF and/or the most recent improvements in OE.

The problem of the inherent insecurity of the relationship between OE
and IE and the OS itself is another matter altogether.  I, of course,
believe that a well informed user can 'handle' OE and IE and MS OS/s
sufficiently securely.  My friends don't seem to be able to, but I can.

Exactly. But it puts the sig at the top of a reply. That isn't exactly where
it belongs <g>

And I must agree there too. For example, while I spend hours fixing
computers for coworkers and friends that are innundated with crapware, I
never have that problem on my own system.

It won't work unless you make Thunderbird the default mail client.
Could you trim that sig? Four lines are considered max for usenet
etiquette.

No. Best you can do (like all OE folders) is hide them, using a
"View" setting. You'll still have to clean it out now and then, but
it'll be easier to find your sent email messages. Alternatively, you
could hide your email messages, to highlight and delete your newsgroup
posts at one go.

If that's the sort of thing you want to bother with.
