Unfortunately, yes.

I don't know anybody at my bank, at any of the outfits that issue the
credit cards I use, at the DMV, the VA, the Social Security
Administration, the county sheriff's office, the FBI or in the
records department of my HMO.

Can I take it that you have a close, personal relationship with the
folks at all those places?

Well, that's not the question the OP asked.

And trusting anyone recommended by PCBUTTS is a foolish thing for anyone

What's wrong with Travelers cheques and Hotel safety deposit boxes? If
you have a problem with the hotel either use another one or don't visit

Just how the hell is this thing going to get your luggage back?

You really should check out the link before replying. It has nothing

From their site:

"An Online Safe Deposit Box from KeepYouSafe is only $49.95 per year. You
can store up to 5 gigabytes of important files and information (like a copy
of your home inventory or homeowners policy), medical records, and more."

Oh puh-leese, a wimpy 5GB of online storage? What a rip-off. You can get
50GB for *free* at adrive.com.

Security is always of concern when you store your sensitive or personal data
online, and even more so for business data. However, even if the site
didn't have SSL to secure the data transfer and you also trusted everyone
that works at the online storage service provider (but remember it's
employees that do most of the customer data theft), it is trivial to do your
own secure data storage. Just encrypt the file before storing it online.
You could use something like TrueCrypt to create volumes or containers in
which to store your encrypted files. Only you would know what is the
password to decrypt them when you retrieve the container file. You could
password-protect your files inside a .zip archive but that isn't as secure
as using a Truecrypt container (provided you use a STRONG password).

So use adrive.com to get up to 50GB of online storage (10 times what the
KeepYouSafe site provides) and get it FREE, too (versus $50/year at
KeepYouSafe). For data you want to secure, encrypt it before uploading it
to the online storage service.

Also remember that the service can encounter earthquakes, wildfires, war,
riots, and other damage. So consider them as a backup storage provider.
Have one copy on-site and use the online provider for off-site storage.
However, with terabyte hard drives getting more common, even 50GB isn't
really huge anymore. So you might want to only use the online storage for
the critical files but use large drives for on-site backups (or even use
them for backups but move them elsewhere to use as off-site backups).

Also, did you even visit that site. That service will go dead in another 3

months. Right at the top of their web page, it says:

NOTICE: KeepYouSafe.Com will be shutting down on March 31, 2010.
All customer data will be securely deleted at that point and logins will
be suspended permanently. Please download anything that you wish to keep
prior to March 31, 2010.

So what are you going to use after March 10? So not only do they give you
only a 10th of adrive's capacity, and not only do they charge $50 when
adrive is free, but they are disappearing in less than 3 months from now.

Kind of defeats the object of safe storage really.
