This relates to microsoft kb - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836662

Requested the patch and downloaded it.

Looks like a self-extracing archive. Double-clicked - nothing. Tried
to run from command shell the above error.

Any ideas?

Yeah, read the workaround instructions and do that instead.

Messin with the registry is way more fun anyway.

I tried it and it worked OK for me. It *is* a self-extracting archive
(or you can open it with WinZip/WinRAR) and it runs fine from the GUI.
To extract it requires the password that they sent you in the email
containing the link.

If downloading it again doesn't work you might try opening it with
WinZip or WinRAR and see what that tells you.

And you *are* running windows 2000 right? You also have to have *only* one external
USB drive getting two drive letters. That is all correct? I got the hot fix and
opened it with no problems with winrar. I don't run 2000, so there's no point in
trying to run it.

I has two exe files inside it and it's only 420KB.

All that running it does is to extract the component files in the
archive so the OS he tried to run it on isn't really an issue. It ran
fine for me on XP (that's referring to the original download of course -
not the executables it contains).

Nice that MS does it as an attachment now too BTW. I guess downloading a
file from their web site is a bit too. er, easy. I did look at their ftp
site the other day - has a whole folder dedicated to windows 95 stuff.
Found *that* hilarious.

Is that how you got it? When I got it, they sent me an email with a link
to download it.

sorry about the delay. Try downloading it again. It sure sounds like you
got a file corrupted in transit. It happens.

Yep. Downloaded again.

I'm beginning to think its a problem with the way the PCs are set up
here in the office. Might download it from home and see if it makes a
difference.

This is bizarre. Re-requested. Downloaded again. Tried on a few PCs.
Still cant get it to work.

Dont suppose someone fancies uploading the constituent files somewhere
for me, do they?

*at* home? Doing at work could have unforseen restriction and you may
be fired for it as well.

You *are* saving it to the desktop right?

Ok, back to basics.

When you examine the drives from the USB, are they both the same size
and do they both have the same exact folders on them? If not, then
nothing needs fixing. They *are* two different drive letters on one
physical drive. Alternatively, open up device manager. How many hard disk
drives are shown there?

If you haven't checked both these things, you don't know if the fix even applies.
