There weren't very many obese people in German concentration camps, were
there? I wonder why that might have been.

Racist? How do you work that out?

My point was that many overweight people will blame their size on all
sorts of things other than their continual and compulsive overeating. In
places (like concentration camps) where it was impossible to overeat,
there were no fat people.

Nothing fucking racist there.

And surely you can provide some backup for that statement? Somehow, I think
not. I have no doubt that many people are obese because of their choices.
However, medical science is now discovering that it isn't always that
simple. There are many medical issues that can result in obesity, some
consider it a similar disfunction to alcoholism, it all depends on who you
talk to.

You mean "politically correct" type of "medical science" with no basis in
fact, right?

Name *ONE*. (And if you say diabetes be prepared for me to shoot that down
so fast it'll make yer head spin)

> some consider it a similar disfunction to

This has been asked of you before. PLEASE point out an obese person in a
concentration camp pic circa WWII.

If yer fat...it's because )for whatever reason) you take more calories in
than you burn. It's just as SIMPLE as that. Burn more calories than you
take in, and you will LOSE weight. And it does not matter if the calories
come from carbs, fat, etc. CARBS are CARBS no matter where they come from.

It's not rocket science for heaven's sake.

When I watch a Discovery Health Channel episode about some man or
woman that weighs 900 lbs, I always wonder (after I stop laughing!)
how they got that way. I mean, didn't they think something was
wrong at 800 lbs? No, how about 700, 600, 500, 400, 300 lbs? Yeah,
I think it's largely by choice. Those people don't start off that
heavy but they HAVE to have gigantic quanties of calories in order
to keep gaining the weight. At some point, THEY should have
stopped, their spouse or parents should have advised them,
somebody. And, what about their doctor? Surely he/she must've
thought something was wrong as they progressed from pleasingly
plump to fat to obese, to morbidly obese, to so obsese that they
literally can't even get out of bed.

Puleeze!

The "science" behind why people get morbidly obese is quite simple:
take in, i.e., eat, more calories than you consume during a 24 hour
day and you WILL gain weight, simple as that. Again, don't those
who "choose" to be excessively chubby THINK about what they're
doing? Yeah, I've heard all the stories "I'm so hungry, I just have
to eat 25 Big Macs at one sitting."

And, what is really curious, is that those that society presumes to
be "poor" are often the most obese. Must be all that cheap food
they're eating, but the "science" still holds true - more calories
in than consumed, gain weight. Less calories intake than consumed,
lose weight.

Remember to spell "Socialist" with an uppercase "S". Yeah, there's
a lot of people in Europe that think that healtcare and everything
else they get from "the government" is free, except that NOTHING
one gets from ANY government is "free" - somebody has to pay one
way or another. And now, "change you can believe in" is trying to
bring Socialism to the United States and is within an eyeblink of
succeeding with the 1st go around of healthcare "reform." Thank God

G'day.

This G'day was brought to you by the world's first Linux Berserker.

It's working nicely, and it's stable. I still have to add quite a few
features but the thing may be ready for beta testing a week earlier than
I expected.

I'm looking forward to it.

These small minded dependent types do not like facts.

They will just ignore facts that do not fit their agenda.

Most of those conditions are pretty rare, although inexplicable weight
gain (which cannot be explained by overeating) might possibly point to
some underlying medical condition which bears further investigation.

From the NHS site:

"Why am I so overweight?

There are many different reasons for being overweight but there are also a
lot of myths. In some people there is a genuine genetic element and
obesity does run in families, but no one is 'big-boned'. Some people,
especially those with diabetes, will find it harder than others to lose
weight. Others may be on drugs, or have medical conditions that cause
weight gain.

However, these factors are rare compared with the principal cause, which
is eating too much and not getting enough exercise. It’s not easy getting
the balance right between energy consumed as food and energy burnt off as
exercise, but it's the key to curing obesity."

In our western world, I would be loath, in this day and age, to attribute
overweight or obesity in anyone to be caused by anything other than the
intake of more calories than one's lifestyle requires, although I do
accept that there are *rare* medical conditions whose symptoms include
overweight or obesity.

Just look at the obesity figures both in your country and here in the UK.
Very few of those high numbers can be put down to the existence of the
rare medical conditions you graciously provided the link to. Sedentary
lifestyles and high calorie intake are more likely to cause overweight/
obesity than anything else.

As I mentioned before in this thread, there were no obese people in
concentration camps. Some, statistically, must have suffered from medical
conditions which in normal circumstances would have displayed symptoms of
overweight or obesity, but these symptoms wouldn't have displayed for the
simple reason that high calorie intake had been removed from the
equation.

> P.S. I'm pleasingly plump... rofl

I've always been slim, with a pretty active lifestyle.

Further to that, I've been further browsing the NHS site and came across
the following:

"Medical reasons

In less than one out of every 100 cases, there is a medical reason for
obesity. Conditions such as Cushing's syndrome (over-production of steroid
hormones in the body) and an under-active thyroid gland are rare causes of
weight gain.

Certain medicines, including some steroids and antidepressants, can
contribute to weight gain. Also, taking the contraceptive pill and
quitting smoking may increase your appetite."

Note: "In less than one out of every 100 cases..."

Willing to bet. What are the odds? 60% Americans are obese or worse.
Scary bet.
