"If Congress can compel the purchase of insurance from a for profit
insurance company, it can compel the purchase of any commodity if there
is an arguable public policy to support it. The auto industry is
collapsing? Forget Cash for Clunkers, just order Americans to buy cars
or tax them if they don't. Obesity crisis? Order Americans to join
health clubs, or tax them if they don't. If Congress gets away with
this, there is no stopping point and Big Business will have succeeded in
making Americans into involuntary consumers whenever it so chooses."

You don't have to buy "mandated" insurance, in most states, if you post a
bond. However, this is something of an 'apples-oranges' comparison. I don't
have to buy auto insurance under state mandate because I don't own a car.
OTOH, how to get rid of my body? I agree it is like a tax on breathing.
Don't want to pay the breathing tax? Stop breathing!

"Todays vote in the Senate to pass their health care reform bill was a
big win for many people. It was a big win for the drug companies, the
biologics industry, the hospital companies, and the for-profit health
insurance corporations. They will all get billions of government dollars
piled on to their ledgers, and and millions of Americans now forced to
buy their products. The vote was also a huge win for the lobbyists who
just saw their profits jump thanks to this great opportunity to show
their clients just how powerful their hold on Washington really is."

The truly amazing this about all this is that the US public have no idea
how much or how long they've been screwed by private health care.

Just to get flamed by rednecks :)
Anyone feeling reasonably healthy but running out of money near each
months end, might think it's a good idea to not have to pay "health taxes"
as long as he/she is healthy ... or at least feels like that.
But ... once getting sick, the whining begins: no insurance will take you
once you are chronically ill or had your first cancer, back surgery,
bypass or whatever ... or just a few pounds too much. To get insurance at
that time, is almost unbearable .... yet the overdue surgery is even more
so. You end up as a victim of the banksters.
So "we" choose to begin paying/saving early enough, but not as much. At
least for basic coverage, yet we can spend extra money for enhanced plans
anytime. Starting at a age the insurance has no clue who will later on
suffer from diseases, but at least benefit from the health plan, and who
will be a happy healthy nett payer all his life.
That's what a insurance is for.
I'll leave space for them to bitch...

Nicely ASSumed. The assumption that the insurance wont be dropped the
minute you get sick or your premiums dont go triple.

The Great Insurrectionist Negro Savior said "affordable"...
Du'h... I guess we'll have to wait for Congress and the Senate to
hammer out an agreement on what exactly "affordable" means...
Then those who don't comply can do time in our understaffed prisons...
or do road-cleanup in those stylish orange suits, or more likely...
Probably something like white people with jobs have to get another
job; while the darker shades get it all for free.
It's the American way! And don't go trying to socialize our facist
way of life without some cost to the taxpaying minority. And all the
while, the insurance industry will just keep-on gettin' richer.
Oh yeah, bay-bee; Merry Christmas to all, and to all an economic crash.
We should just elect Sarah Palin and Rush Limberger, and get it
right for a change. We may have a depression, but we'll have plenty
of moose to eat - as long as we get enough oil from Iraq to keep the
helicopters flying.

No, pinhead. Its the overhead costs of management. You remove that layer
and it becomes less expensive. The cost of malpractice insurance for
doctors is also unfortunately a big expense which is passed along to the
patient.

And *I* say the whole health care mess could be fixed without raping
Medicare and costing even more trillions of dollars we don't have. Simply
open it up so the insurance companies can sell across State lines. Now you
have more competition. More competition = Lower prices. Don't believe me?
Ever since Verizon FIOS became available on my street, I'm paying Comcast a
LOT (close to $50.00) less for TV/Phone/Internet per month than I was.
Think about it. And while yer at it, think on the following as well ....
Working people have enough of a tax burden as it is. And now we're gonna
have the added burden of paying for this health insurance MESS for 3-4 years
BEFORE ANY OF IT goes into effect. That's like paying rent on an apartment
for 3-4 years before yer allowed to move in. Is that a good deal? I don't
think so.

Theres no variability in services. Its a set commodity.
In health insurance theres a lot more variability in needs.

It is overhead as well as grade math seniors and the computation power to
buy plus the money to spend for proposed customers health relevant data.
Therefore, public healthcare insurance (which is not allowed to do
individual risk calculations and to reject customers) has to be a bit
cheaper. Ok, there may be more politicians trying to interfere with best
business practice or get their friends a good income, so the overhead
costs could overrule the benefits.
And this takes out your specious argument that its "affordable"
healthcare now:

Private health insurance may do that, depending upon the kind of contract
and law regulations. A strong enough government should establish proper
regulations to keep the business a insurance.
Of course, the later the contract is made, the higher the charges.
Public health insurance indeed is a alternative.

Private insurances may (try to) do that - but it produces bad advertisment
at least, and after all it needs partially illegal means of data
gathering, with predisposition for bribery and corruption. And, it needs
skilled personnel with advanced mathematics knowledge.

They have to do one for the other. There is competition as well ... unless
corruption has taken over the whole business.
Which, indeed, would be a good time to offer alternatives.
