As part of Geography Awareness Week in the US (http://
mywonderfulworld.org/gaw.html) National Geographic asked United States
Senators to draw and label their home states with at least three
important places. The maps and points can be found at Senators'

Obviously there is quite a bit of money available in the US to promote
Geography since the Roper survey, and I think a project like this is
interesting....

My question - would this ever happen in Australia and should it???

Yes it should... something like the SA weather in the past week (piggy backing on the Victorian fires at the beginning of the year) may trigger some sort of response locally...

The introduction of the national curriculum should be the start of this development of resources... Some of this will be community based which we can use in geography classes and to generate more.

Google Earth, GIS www interfaces, the Web 2.0 technologies, GPS devices and similar content is a data opportunity waiting to be captured.
We can use these for hazard mitigation, water sustainability, (natural) resource management and all sorts of geographically relevant issues

My question would be how can we harness the more modern technologies to utilise them as geographical tools?
Furthermore,
(a) how can we encourage industry or open source software developers to increase R & D for geographical tools and applications
and (b) how do we respond with associated curriculum to this?

Good idea, Rebecca!

I'm sure, in this "Building the Education Revolutïon" spirit, ALP
members of parliament would be happy to do some drawings for us. Be a
great move on the part of parliamentarians, as it would demonstrate
that they can do something else other than behave like naughty
children on the floor of Parliament House. let's lobby for it to
happen!
