I didn't know there was a third version of the Alibi. The only ones I was
aware of were the 7" and 12" which have both been on Fun Boy 3 CDs and the
one that's part of Live On The Test. The bloke who compiled the CD either
wasn't aware of the NME one or couldn't get the license. I only got involved
when I was suggested to him by a mutual friend who thought I might have FB3
promo pictures and be interested in writing a sleeve note.
According to EMI there isn't a 12" version of T'aint What You Do! Their
masters have it as TWO tracks: the album version of It Ain't and a separate
track Just Do It. The sleeve and label of the original actually show this to
be the case as their titles are separated by a /. They are segued together
to sound like one track on the original 12". We think this may explain why
the 'extended version' has never appeared on CD. Just Do It sounds really
odd on its own as it has a sudden start, but if you listen to the 12" again
you'll notice it plays exactly as the album version (ending with the sound
of the tape spinning backwards that would launch into The Telephone Always
Rings) and then Just Do It starts without an audible gap. Just Do It hasn't
been on any FB3 CD I've found up to now, but it will be on the new one.
We didn't see the point in spending additional money on mastering up a
'fake' copy of the 12", as this would mean this CD had the same version of
It Ain't twice plus Just Do It, so Just Do It is on there as the first bonus
track, no matter how odd the start sounds!
Cheers
