Given the track record of shows of this type, I was not expecting very
much from this show, but was quite pleasantly surprised by the depth
of display and presentation.
Like most folks my age, watching the Ed Sullivan Show was a must every
Sunday night. I had forgotten how many Rock acts he had on his
program...and admittedly during the last couple of years of his
program, I was more likely to be listening to FM radio than watching
TV...so I missed some of the latter acts like CCR. Seeing him embrace
Joplin...wow, what a moment.
The folks who were introducing the Sullivan acts...Jay Thomas and Paul
Schaffer...did a fairly decent job. Of course, the show's purpose was
that of a pledge drive for PBS, but it was considerably less obnoxious
than some I've viewed in the past.
Unfortunately, I don't have $150 to spare to buy the 4 DVD set, but
I'd love to own it.
If Ed Sullivan's 60s hasn't played on you local PBS channel yet, by
all means tune it in.
