H.O.W.

In honesty, WE recover, The strength to face our fears,
In open-mindedness, WE recover, Our thoughts become clear,
In willingness, WE recover, All of our lost tears,
WE learn, WE laugh, WE live, WE love,

In accepting, WE recover, Those lost parts of ourselves,
In surrender, WE recover, Today as a reality,
In our sadness, WE recover, Those children who love unconditionally,
WE hug, WE smile, WE speak, WE are miracles,

In reflection, WE recover, The innocence we had forsaken,
In attending, WE recover, The courage that was shaken,
In prayer, WE recover, Ourselves as we awaken, To the now, and the H.O.W.
WE feel.

Just For Today
May 24                                Risking Vulnerability

"As we grow, we learn to overcome the tendency to run and hide
from ourselves and our feelings." Basic Text, p. 81

Rather than risk vulnerability, many of us have developed habits that
keep others at a safe distance. These patterns of emotional isolation
can give us the feeling we are hopelessly locked behind our masks.
We used to take risks with our lives; now we can take risks with our
feelings. Through sharing with other addicts, we learn that we are not
unique; we do not make ourselves unduly vulnerable simply by letting
others know who we are, for we are in good company. And by working
the Twelve Steps of the N.A. program, we grow and change. We no
longer want or need to hide our emerging selves. We are offered the
opportunity to shed the emotional camouflage we developed to survive
our active addiction.

By opening ourselves to others, we risk becoming vulnerable, but that
risk is well worth the rewards. With the help of our sponsor and other
recovering addicts, we learn how to express our feelings honestly and
openly. In turn, we become nourished and encouraged by the
unconditional love of our companions. As we practice spiritual
principles, we find strength and freedom, both in ourselves and in
those around us. We are set free to be ourselves and to enjoy the
company of our fellow addicts.

Just for today: I will openly and honestly share with another recovering
addict. I will risk becoming vulnerable and celebrate my self and my
friendship with other NA members. I will grow.   pg. 150

The Easier, Softer Way

If we skip this vital step, we may not overcome drinking.
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p.  72

I certainly didn't leap at the opportunity to face who I was, especially
when the pains of my drinking days hung over me like a dark cloud.
But I soon heard at the meetings about the fellow member who just
didn't want to take Step Five and kept coming back to meetings,
trembling from the horrors of reliving his past.  The easier, softer way
is to take these Steps to freedom from our fatal disease, and to put
our faith in the Fellowship and our Higher Power.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ May 24th

A.A. Thought for the Day

In twelfth-step work, the third thing is conviction. Prospects
must be convinced that they honestly want to stop drinking.
They must see and admit that their life is unmanageable. They
must face the fact that they must do something about their
drinking. They must be absolutely honest with themselves and
face themselves as they really are. They must be convinced
that they must give up drinking and they must see that their
whole life depends on this conviction. Do I care enough about
other alcoholics to help them reach this conviction?

Meditation for the Day

There is no limit to what you can accomplish in helping others.
Keep that thought always. Never relinquish any work or give
up the thought of any accomplishment because it seems beyond
your power. God will help you in all good work. Only give it up if
you feel that it's not God's will for you. In helping others,
think of the tiny seed under the dark, hard ground. There is
no certainty that, when it has forced its way up to the surface,
sunlight and warmth will greet it. Often a task seems beyond
your power, but there is no limit to what you can accomplish
with God's help.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may never become discouraged in helping others.
I pray that I may always rely on the power of God to help me.

Today's Thought
MAY 24

You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Melody Beattie ©

Letting the Cycles Flow

Life is cyclical, not static. Our relationships benefit when we
allow them to follow their own natural cycles.

Like the tide ebbs and flows, so do the cycles in relationships.
We have periods of closeness and periods of distance. We have
times of coming together and times of separating to work on
individual issues.

We have times of love and joy, and times of anger.

Sometimes, the dimensions of relationships change as we go
through changes. Sometimes, life brings us new friends or a
new loved one to teach us the next lesson.

That does not mean the old friend disappears forever. It means
we have entered a new cycle.

We do not have to control the course of our relationships,
whether these be friendships or love relationships. We do not
have to satisfy our need to control by imposing a static form
on relationships.

Let it flow. Be open to the cycles. Love will not disappear. The
bond between friends will not sever. Things do not remain the
same forever, especially when we are growing and changing at
such a rapid pace.

Trust the flow. Take care of yourself, but be willing to let people
go. Hanging on to them too tightly will make them disappear.

The old adage about love still holds true: If it's meant to be, it will
be. And if you love someone, let them go. If they come back to
you, the love is yours.

Today, I accept the cyclical nature of life and relationships. I will
strive to go with the flow. I will strive for harmony with my own
needs and the needs of the other person.

Opening Up To Love
by Deborah Johnson

Once upon a time, there was a young woman who gave and gave to other people until it hurt. She cooked for people, always threw parties or gave presents to friends on their birthdays, bought expensive clothes for her boyfriend, and generally bent over backwards to help anyone she cared about (or didn't care about). It pleased her no end to buy something special for a friend, even when she really needed some new clothing for herself. That didn't seem to matter.

She often wondered why no one brought her flowers, and why no one did anything for her birthday--even when she hinted it was coming. The young woman also wondered why she always felt empty and lonely inside. Then, one day it hit her like a ton of bricks! She had been doing all these wonderful things for other people, completely disregarding her own needs. A little voice inside had been trying hard for years to tell her this, but she so desperately needed love that she kept doing what her subconscious logically thought would work, giving to others so that they would give to her.

As soon as she realized that she needed to love herself more, she began doing little things for herself; things she had previously expected other people to do for her. She began buying herself a bouquet of flowers once a week. When she'd forget, she would find that her friends brought her flowers! Wonder of wonders, every time she did something nice for herself, it increased the amount of nice things other people did for her, almost in direct proportion!

Then she took herself on a cruise to the Hawaiian Islands, fell in love with Hawaii, and decided to live there for awhile. However, the loneliness got worse, even in paradise. One morning the young woman woke up with the solution. "Aha!" she cried, "If giving myself gifts helped others to give me gifts, why not try giving myself LOVE so others will be able to give me more love? It's worth a try."

So she began with simple spiritual exercises that worked for her and opened her heart to let God's love in. It was miraculous. She was able to identify and accept this love, and realize that it is the true source of ALL love, no matter who she thought it might be coming from. Then she began feeling comfortable being alone. Even though she still wanted a mate, she did not feel so lonely, and could accept more of what life brought (or didn't bring). Because she was able to love herself, and take the time to give this pure love of spirit to herself, she began to receive more love from friends, family, and finally from a man with whom she felt closer to than anyone else. As she continues this process, the joy in her life is still increasing daily, and she overshadows the small bits of loneliness with more and more love.

Yes, that story was about me! Here is an exercise I used to help me love and open up to the purest, most secure and satisfying love there is.

See yourself walking in a desert. If you are feeling particularly abandoned or forlorn, you can think of it as a vast, lonely desert with no love to be anywhere. You have been walking for a long time and are very thirsty. Suddenly you spy a patch of green... an oasis! As you get closer, it calls to you with a hauntingly beautiful melody and a radiant heavenly glow. As you enter it you see a lovely alabaster fountain flowing with a spray of water sparkling like diamonds. Your guardian angel is standing next to the fountain, and hands you a cup of this magnificent nectar of the heavens. You drink it gratefully, feeling it not only quench your thirst, but also filling you with the most wonderful feeling of love and contentment ever.

You are then invited to bathe in this extraordinary fountain, and you do so, feeling now completely surrounded by this awesome feeling of pure, true love. You feel protected, loved, and cherished like you have never felt before. You walk back into your life singing.

If you like, you can sing out HU, which is an ancient name for God found in every sound on earth. Sing it out with a long drawn out breath and the vibration of that name will fill you with even more love.

Another simple exercise is to think of a time you felt more loved than any other you can remember, and get into that feeling, no matter how far back it goes, even if you were rocking in your mother's arms. Now fill yourself with that love and let it open your heart to more.

I also invite you to make up your own exercise, one that suits your own spiritual beliefs and lifestyle. If you do this sort of thing daily, I guarantee you will be graced with much more love in your life

HOW CAN YOU TELL WHEN IT'S YOUR INTUITION ON THE LINE? -

The question I'm asked most often is "How do I know it's my intuition and not fear or wishful thinking?" This is such a tough question to answer because it's really about knowing yourself. Most of us feel fear when we try anything new because it takes us out of our comfort zone. Conversely, most of us have an ideal life we'd like to experience and our intuition can help guide us there. But how do we know it's not just "Pollyanna thinking?" Here are some guidelines to help you in trusting your intuition:

* If the message contains thoughts of hope, love, encouragement, wisdom, strength and comfort, it's your intuition speaking.

* You may feel a sense of peace come over you as you contemplate a right course of action. You may still feel nervous about actually doing this thing but you will feel right about it nonetheless.

* You feel consistently passionate and excited about something over
a period of time. This is usually a nudge from your intuition to
go for it.

* You've followed your guidance and taken some small steps towards your goal and you find that opportunities begin to open up to you. You're on the right path!

* You're drawn to a book or overhear a conversation and the words seem as though they were directly spoken to you in answer to your request for guidance.

* You begin to feel grateful or have an attitude of appreciation for your life even though you may be going through a difficult time. This is your intuition speaking.

* Insight that comes quickly into your mind after a prayer or request for guidance is usually the right path to follow.

Lynn Robinson

Boundaries---tough deal if you've never set them.  Just a suggestion----
take some lipstick and write on your mirror:

1) I AM OK.
when you believe that in YOUR HEART,
then write:

2) GOD LOVES ME.
when you believe that in YOUR HEART,
then write:

3) I AM WORTHY OF GODS LOVE.
when you believe that in YOUR HEART,
then write:

4) TODAY I AM LOVEABLE.
when you believe that in YOUR HEART,
then write:

5) TODAY I LOVE WHO I HAVE BECOME, A LOVING CHILD OF GOD.

That's it. There is no hurry.  It sometimes takes awhile to get from
your head to your heart.  You'll know when it gets to your heart,
then move to the next one. When you get to number 5, live it to the
best of your ability each day and you will have become a loving,
caring child of God who will receive His blessings beyond your wildest
imagination. Be patient.  It will all come in Gods time, but you must
TAKE THE ACTION!!!

At some point you will find your past will become an asset to help someone
else.
We each go through what we go through in order to be of maximum service to
other children of God.

The basics---pretty simple and it works for anything you might be going
through to keep you OK with what you're going through!!
1) Go to meetings and don't drink or use drugs in between the meetings.
2) Pray to a God of your understanding.
3) Participate in your recovery. (work the steps with the help of a sponsor)
4) Help others.
5) Be responsible.
That's it.  Simple but not easy.

I love you my friend,
Richard

Faith

Faith isn't anything you can see;
It isn't anything you can touch.
But you can feel it in your heart.
Faith is what keeps you trying
When others would have given up.
It keeps you believing in
The goodness of others
And helps you find it.

Faith is trusting in a power
Greater than yourself
And knowing that whatever happens,
This power will carry you through anything.
It is believing in yourself
And having courage
To stand up for what you believe in.

Faith is:
Peace in the midst of a storm,
Determination in the midst
Of adversity,
And safety in the midst of trouble.
For nothing can touch a soul
That is protected by faith.

Decisions

Sometimes we make up our minds
sometimes our mind makes itself up
as it comes to some sort of understanding
with itself
It’s a quirk of the human brain
to reconcile its beliefs and values
with what’s fermenting on the outside

The day brings choices laid out before us
which the night introduced
The day is wide open to all we can be
A prelude to living out our dreams
In the real-time of the rest of our life

Use one day as template
Calm the inner rumblings
Make the choice to follow your Spirit

Make those dreams
come true
and live with integrity of the heart

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*Keep The Focus On You*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I make a continual practice of self-love, whether I am up or down, sick or
well, tired or well-rested.

There may be nothing harder than sticking to a policy of self-love
regardless of the flux of my feelings. For when things are not going the way
I want them to, when my expectations are not being fulfilled, I immediately
begin the old pattern of shoveling myself into the garbage as if I am a
useless failure.

If I stop and take note when I take out the shovel, I will be able to
realize that as a child I had few resources to keep alive the sense of
myself as lovable. But now I am free to develop all the resources I need. I
have friends to call who will remind me I am loved. I can look at my face in
the mirror and affirm my love for myself. I can hug myself or a teddy bear
and console the child within me. I can slow down and become aware of my
Higher Power as a force that I can trust to lead me and provide for me all
that I need, even when I am unable to see the provisions.
