God helped me fix my home computer last night. I mentioned in my e-mail yesterday how it had a virus and I needed to take action to repair the problem. God gave me the guidance I needed to handle the situation soberly - understanding it will take time to fix (I can't have what I want when I want it), the willingness to ask for help and follow the suggestions of my IT guy here at work, and them to carry out the suggestion without getting frustrated or angry. After removing three Trojan virus's yesterday and a 2-hour long full computer scan, it's up and running with protection! A good example of how I used the principles of recovery into all my affairs. Oh yeah - I didn't find the need or desire to drink over the frustration of a broken computer ;)

How we define an easy life may differ because everything is relative. Some of us were raised in prosperous homes, which might have meant we weren't required to seek work or do chores around the house. But that kind of privilege didn't guarantee an easy life. Wealth doesn't eliminate the possibility for abuse of many forms.

This morning I feel a lack of control and powerlessness - but not unmanageability. My home computer has a virus, my Twitter account seems to have reset its password and I cannot access it, and the economy is so slow that there is actually nothing to do at work this morning! These little things are the challenges that life is presenting to me - what is important is how I deal with the small stuff. I have utilized the serenity prayer and went to a morning meeting - now I must take action to resolve these technological issues. I hate when the computer at home doesn't work - the sense of being disconnected makes me feel out of control .. at least my life isn't unmanageable as a result. Back in the drinking days - this would have been enough frustrating fuel to spark a big drunken mess!

finding hope

I'd like to write about a special person that came into my life sometime ago, when i started to address my problem with Meth Addiction..
I took this person on to be my sprititual counselor. since then 3 years ago, I am now sober and enjoying b eing off Meth longer then i ever expected.
This person would show up everywhere i was. Meetings, presentation, dinners, even at A.A. meetings sharing her concerns and her personal version of what she felt alcoholism was really about.

This quote made no sense to me for many years. I mean, in the beginning the whole concept of "turn it over" and "surrender" was as foreign to me as speaking another language. I fought every step of the way to control every aspect of my life and was sure I could do it, too. As I worked the steps, though, I was confronted with the unmanageability and wreckage of my life, and I finally admitted that perhaps I didn't have all the answers.

Connection is not just about making time for family and friends. It's about a sense of caring for other people. It's about connecting with the human spirit even when there is no national crisis. The other day I was walking down the street when a woman ahead of me tripped and fell on the sidewalk. Two people walked by her as if she weren't there. Others just stared without offering help; I stopped to help, as did another person. We both waited for an ambulance to arrive and then we left. I couldn't believe what I had just witnessed: a human being was in need of assistance and most people walked on by.

The topics of the Daily Reflections from the past two days combine together to provide me a wonderful message that I was able to carry out into all my affairs this weekend. The readings remind us to "think of others" and to "reach out" to help those in need. This of course relates to 12th Step work with another alcoholic - and in my case even to showing up to support family members. A distant relative on my wife's side of the family passed away late last week and the funeral was yesterday. My wife and I made the decision to attend the funeral to show loving support for her family - many of whom we are close with who had more interactions with the deceased woman than we did. Sure, it meant spending a day away from our daughter and spending unplanned money on a baby-sitter, but not being so self-centered and actually being there for others by taking action was our motivation. Her family is large and very close and supportive - so it was appreciated to have the strength of warm hugs, peace and serenity in numbers. Kids learn by seeing what their parents do - so we try to set good examples as often as possible for our daughter.
