FYI... Contributions requested for openstreetmap -- given that there's new imagery. -Jodi

Begin forwarded message:

Hi,

I am sending this out to all Irish members of openstreetmap.org. New imagery has recently become available of Ireland which covers most of Ireland.

What this means is that it is now even easier to add information to the map.

Openstreetmap has seen a surge in growth globally over the last 12 months with many global (Foursquare, Nestoria, Apple, Barnes & Noble etc) and local (Daft.ie, myhome.ie, Irish Times) companies now making use of the data as it is completely free to use.

I would encourage everyone to login and add something to the map, be it the "L number" of the country road your house is on, the nearest pub or cafe in your area, the path you take through the hills on your Sunday walk......the options are endless.

There are numerous resources available to help you on your way: * OSM wiki which will provide you helpful guidance on the correct tagging to use * The Irish chatroom where local mappers hang out and are always to provide advice if you get stuck * There are also threads on Boards.ie in the Roads and Galway forums where mappers will also provide help if needed

Go ahead and put your area on the map, the more information added, the more useful the map becomes, check out ITOworld for examples of how useful OSM maps and data can be.

Best of luck Dave (aka DaCor on OSM)

OSM is one of the coolest crowd-sources projects out there. I have been a contributor, albeit small-time for a while now.
In return... excellent updates for my Garmin: http://www.gerryk.com/node/26

In case anyone is interested OSMand is a pretty good OSM android app. A little rough around the edges at times (especially with routing), but great amount of detail compared to google maps. Far more paths and walking routes included etc and it works offline after you've downloaded the 70mb Ireland package.

I believe there's also a premium version to support the devs which allows you to download unlimited number of maps.

There are GPS  loggers available for Android, which allow one to record traces for import into OSM, so if your particular little boreen is not represented... take a walk|run|cycle|drive and upload to the map.

I've been contributing myself a bit, quite a bit actually since the new imagery became available.

Galway City has unreal detail to it at this stage. Still not finished, but getting there for certain..

I've mostly being doing places out in the country, adding roads that were missing which couldn't be added with much accuracy without a decent aerial pic. Also adding GAA and soccer pitches all over, so I remember them for again... lol

Hi Folks,

First time posting here, first time using Google groups to be honest.

I am the one who sent out that message to every Irish member of OSM that I could find (took hours hah).

If anyone needs any help starting out let me know, I'll gladly pass on what I've learnt. I can show you how to use the various editors (Potlatch2 or JOSM), how to collect data on the move (OSMtracker - Android) or how to make edits to the map on the move (Vespucci - Android).

I have been half-heartedly trying to organise mapping parties around Galway with little luck, but if anyone is interested in one I could look at organising something (would it be possible to use 091labs space?).

Let me know if anyone is interested.

Dave

I think it would be fantastic to do a mapping party in Galway and I agree this would be a good thing to do at 091labs!

Would hackerspace week be a good time for it? Here's the schedule so far (a few things may not yet be listed):

PS-Welcome, Dave! :)

Thanks Jodi,

I am available any dates except 20th & 21st (looks like they are full anyway) so if people are up for it, I can definetly come along and show new people what its about and how to get started.

I don't know what way Hackerspace week works, but if you are looking for more I could give a short presentation on
- what its about
- how it got started
- progress
- where next
- etc etc

Do I talk to anyone in particular about doing this?

Dave
