Subject: Meeting for a New Social Space for Galway this Thursday 7pm Massimo
To:

Hi all,

There's a first meeting this Thursday 19th April from 7pm-8pm in
Massimo, William St. West (near the Crane Bar) to explore setting up a
social centre for Galway similar to Seomra Spraoi in Dublin. All
welcome!

FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/334888589898527/

Now that the Spirit Centre and the Garden of Transition are soon to be
homeless what about getting a new venue together? We could collaborate
with other like-minded groups or organisations to rent a space
together. We could get a much better space by pooling resources. There
is potential for lots of things: classes, film screenings, a cafe,
small music concerts, lectures, debates, a shop, a library, urban
gardening, stand up comedy, small scale theatre, book launches, poetry
readings, art exhibitions etc.

Seomra Spraoi in Dublin is a possible model of what's possible
(http://seomraspraoi.org/).

That's interesting, would the labs ever consider merging with these groups?

While our goals and objectives are fundamentally different in many ways (091 Labs is a members club that is open to the public for some, but not strictly all, events), I would be more than happy - delighted in fact - to run crossover events between the maker- and social-spaces. Every little helps these days, as they say.

As for a formal merge, I would be very much against it. The two models are simply incompatible.

+1 What Aaron said.

Collaboration and Joint Ventures are to be recommended, but diversity in social groups, maker spaces is a positive thing.

+1 Aaron.

Can anybody make their meeting on Thursday? I think it would be great to start out collaborating with them now. I'd go but I'll be in London, I'm afraid.

I'll be... wherever this stag I'm going on is to be, but out of the country either way, sorry.

Its a nice idea alright, assuming we can hammer out issues involving who is in charge of what. Wasn't something like this ment to happen with Mens Shed to? What happened there?
