Deja to Google Mappings

Were you a Deja power user? Here are some tips describing how you can duplicate many of Deja's advanced features with Google Groups. Also check out our advanced search page, which exposes many of these features.

On Deja you could... On Google, try...
Search or view a particular group
e.g. ~g comp.os.linux.announce
group:comp.os.linux.announce
Search or view a particular group hierarchy
e.g. ~g comp.*
group:comp.*
Search a set of groups using wildcards
e.g. ~g *.forsale
Restrict your search to a particular set of newsgroups by using the 'Newsgroups' box on the advanced search page, or using the group: operator (for example, [ boats group:*forsale ]).
Search within article subjects
e.g. ~s chess
insubject:chess
Search for articles by a particular author
e.g. ~a john_smith@dejanews.com
author:john_smith@dejanews.com
Search for articles in a particular language
e.g. ~l italian
Use the advanced search page to restrict your search to articles in a particular language.
Search by creation date
e.g. ~dc
Use the advanced search page to search for messages posted in the last week, the last month, or in a date range that you specify.
Search all keywords
e.g. linux & bug
This is the default mechanism on google. Searches for [ linux bug ] will find only articles with linux and bug in them.
Search any keyword
e.g. linux | bug
linux OR bug
Negation
e.g. linux ~bug
linux -bug
General boolean search We do not support arbitrary boolean expressions. You can however mix the above methods. For instance [ linux OR microsoft OR mac rules -bugs ] would return articles which describe whether linux, microsoft or macs rule, but none mentioning bugs. For more information, see our general search tips.
Search a specific archive
(Standard/Complete/Adult/Jobs/...)
Stay tuned... we are working on this.
See more results per page Use the advanced search page to increase the number of results per page.
Results format
(Concise/Detailed/Threaded)
Browsing through newsgroups gives you a compact view of recent threads in that group; searching gives you results that contain an excerpt from the message in addition to its title, date, and author. We are working on providing an improved thread view.
Add sort criteria to your search
(Group/Author/Subject/Date)
Currently, when you perform a search, articles are sorted by relevance (also known as confidence); click the 'Sort by Date' link to change to that display. When you view a thread, articles are sorted by date, with oldest articles first. When you view a particular group, eg group:comp.os.linux.announce, articles are sorted by date, with newest articles first.
Find an article with a particular message ID Search for msgid:xxx@yyy.com, or go to our advanced search page.
