Dear Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I hereby announce my immediate retirement
from posting to Usenet.

I have had a long and enjoyable career here on Usenet. I have forged
friendships that I hope to maintain for the rest of my life. I have
exposed, examined, and corrected many personal issues and much kookish
tendency since my arrival on this network in late 1996, and furthermore I
believe that I have made a positive difference in many lives as a result of
my involvement. The lurkers, who support me in e-mail, have told me so
many times ;-)

I want to be clear: this is not a troll (or a work for you rasslin' folk).
As some of you are aware, I have been involved for a while now with a local
non-profit group which does a great deal of community service work, much of
it with kids and teenagers. For the most part, I have been able to avoid
having the whackjobs of Usenet interfere with that work, and that's fine;
what little impact they've had has been minimal and ineffective.

In recent weeks, however, I have been working with my group on a deal which
will likely bring me to low-key but national prominence in the theatrical
and non-profit communities.

When a blithering jackass like Alex Cain or Dick 'FreeSpeechStore' Scoville
is harassing my pissant little one-man web design business, it is
meaningless; I control the horizontal and the vertical, and dealing with
their idiocy is a simple matter of hitting the delete button.

However, this new situation that has developed involves a high-profile
relationship with some major corporations and non-profit organizations
which are doing tremendously important work to promote the arts and
education, especially among poor and minority youth, and I will be involved
with this process on a long-term, ongoing, daily basis.

After long and deep consideration, I have come to the conclusion that I can
not, in good conscience, risk having these kids exposed to the kind of
sickness that resides in the likes of Dink and Dick. When it's a couple of
hundred dollar contract with a small-town bait store or mom & pop aitique
shop on the line, I don't care. When you're talking about deals worth tens
or even hundreds of thousands (or even millions, over a fairly short period
of time) of dollars that will benefit untold numbers of kids who might
otherwise be lost to drug abuse, illiteracy, parental neglect or abuse, and
all the other things that children in our society face each and every
day...well, you have to step back and reassess things. Additionally this
situation allows me to make a very real difference in the real world in
regards to issues that have always been important to me here, like race
relations, minority tolerance, and just plain common sense.

It would be ignorant, self-destructive, and completely insane of me to put
all of that at risk just so I can keep reminding Dink that he's an midget
racist cocksucker, or so I can keep reminding Dick 'FreeSpeechStore'
Scoville that his very existence is a vomitous abomination which is a vile
and obscene affront to the concept of free speech in every possible way.

It is frustrating for me, after all these years of being 'bulletproof,' to
have to finally step away and admit that I have enough to lose - for myself
and for others - that I can no longer take the risks involved in
continually humiliating bottom-feeding lowlife scumbacks like Richard
Scoville or Alex Cain for the enjoyment of the sane Usenet public. It is
further frustrating to acknowledge that these kinds of barely-human fascist
freaks have the ability to impact my offline life in a negative fashion.

But that's life.

I'm moving into an area where people simply aren't used to dealing with
that kind of nonsense, and the last thing I need is Dink or Scoville or one
of their ilk e-mailing the CEO of XYZ to tell them some nonsense story
about how I abuse my kid or I'm an internet stalker, and costing a vital
community service organization thousands of dollars in financial support as
well as community goodwill in the process.

It is an unfortunate but accurate observation that there is a high risk
that someone who lacks understanding of the Internet and especially Usenet
may take such blathering at face value, and as I find myself moving into a
position where I can once again legitimately have a positive influence on
the lives of thousands of people over a period that may very well span the
rest of my life, I cannot take that risk. Too many lives are at stake.

I am proud of my accomplishments, in real life and on Usenet. These
current developments represent not only the realization of a lifetime of
work, but the chance for me to use the mistakes I've made in my own life
with drugs, sex, and rock-and-roll to help other young people with just as
much (or more!) fire and talent and intellect as I have *avoid* those
pitfalls and make their mark more effectively than I ever did as a
musician.

This is, in short, the opportunity that I have been working toward my
entire life.

I have to weigh everything, and in the end analysis, this opportunity is
simply too valuable - to me as a person and to the community, the region,
and even the world entire - for me to risk over what is, ultimately, a
hobby.

Simply put: I will soon no longer be bulletproof, and it makes no sense to
continue wearing a target when those travelling with me are unable to tell
the difference between rubber bullets and real ones.

So if Dink, Scoville, or whoever wants to claim victory and dance on my
virtual grave, so be it. If you want to claim you've "won," go right
ahead. I should hope to never be a 'winner' like you! My ego can take it,
as can the loss of my fun little hobby of embraassing psychotic losers.

I'm willing to make that sacrifice, willing to take that hit to my ego.

I'm not willing to sacrifice the positive influence that I and the
organizations I will be working with can make on the lives of kids who
otherwise may have no hope for their futures.

So, almost precisely 9 years to the day after my first Usenet post, I big
you all adieu, and my many thanks to you all for your friendship and
comradierie throughout the last decade of my life. Being insane here has
helped keep me sane in the real world over the years, and I've grown beyond
that insanity...and now I have the change to finally make a positive
difference in a way that I have not been able to since I was playing to
crowds of 15,000 or more...and maybe in a way that I have *never* been able
to.

My websites, lowgenius.com and lowgenius.net, will remain online, as will
all of my client sites. You all know how to contact me if need be; the
address in my header will remain valid (remove the y of course) and you can
always reach me via john at low genius dot com, as well as the contact
forms at my sites and the lj, and the soopersekrit back-channel message
board will remain online for those few of you who have access to it. My
livejournal will remain active, and all that good stuff.

Unfortunately, my profile is just too high, and there are too many weirdos
and nutjobs who are obsessed with me, for me to continue as I have been.
More lives than mine are now at stake in a way that foolish infantile
anacephalic losers like Dink and Scoville can even begin to fathom.

Thank you all again for your help, no matter how great or small, in helping
me grow out of the perpetual adolescence I was locked in 9 years ago to the
confident, capable, self-assured, and somewhat successful man and leader
that I am now in the endless process of becoming. Special thanks to Kevin
Cannon of insurgent.org and Gary Burnore of Databasix.Com for helping me
stay bulletproof.

Again: this is not a troll or a drill or a work. I'm not trying to win a
Sallinger HL&S award or get nominated for anyone's hall of fame or
popularity contest. This Is The Real Deal. This is not the result of any
pressure from any person, malignant or benign. This is not the result of
my being netcopped, or of someone within my organization being phoned or e-
mailed and pressuring me to leave this behind as a result. This is my own
decision, made completely on my own, without input or influence from any
other person or organization.

And this is, legitimately, the last time Usenet will see a post from John
Henry. Anyone reading this message is more than welcome to contact me, add
me to your LJ friends' list, or whatever. Unless, of course, you're a
stupid dick like Scoville or Dink, in which case you can kindly go screw
yourself, you lifeless jackass.

Good luck to you. we've never really talked at length, at most you're
aware of me as much as I am of you. However that said I know what it's
like as a freelance web engineer trying to make a living. I took the
easy road and got an office job so you will always have my respect for
seeing it out and coming through the other side better for it.

Best of luck in your line of work, I know from personal experience that
it has been hard to get there.
