Hi there!

I would like to contribute Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter by Theodore Roosevelt. It is on the "For Your First Production" list.

- Transcriptions are here: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/61935

Great, that one would be a good start.

This has a lot of illustrations that we want to keep. See the manual for
copy and paste formatting for figures. I also see one table but that
shouldn't be too hard to replicate. There are also footnotes that you'll
have to convert to an endnotes file. I also see at
least one letter. Because there is frontmatter including a frontispiece,
you'll have to add a half title page.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish. Please follow
it exactly:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can assign you a manager and reviewer.

Have fun! :)

Thanks so much Alex!

I am working through the steps now. I have set up a git repository at https://codeberg.org/cosmicrose/theodore-roosevelt_outdoor-pastimes-of-an-american-hunter.

My first question: Is there a semantic markup for the signature and dateline of an introduction, or a dedication? I initially marked up the dedication as a letter but the linter told me not to, so I'm not sure what to mark it up with, if I need to mark it up with anything at all besides what is necessary for styling.

Another question:

There is a reference to the "facing page" which also contains a link to Project Gutenberg's ID for the page element. The full sentence including markup looks like this:

The photograph of Turk and the bobcat in the piñon (facing <abbr>p.</abbr> <a class="pginternal" href="#Page_12">12</a>) shows them at an altitude of about thirty feet above the ground.

I understand that I need to remove the anchor markup, since it is no longer relevant, but how should I handle the text itself referencing the image? A new anchor tag linking to the figure is easy, but I am guessing an editorial commit is needed to change the content of the parenthetical.

There are no pages in ebooks, so what you can do is remove the
parenthetical and add a link to the text `bobcat in the piñon` that
points to relevant figure directly. (i.e. an anchor link like
`path/to/file.xhtml#illustion-1` or whatever.)

I'm working through a proofreading, and I believe the work is in a place where I can start taking feedback.

Have you found a cover painting and gotten it approved yet? You will need to complete all of the steps in the step-by-step guide before I start doing a formal review for publication.

Also, I was looking at your git history and I noticed that your commit history is quite different from what we expect in a Standard Ebooks format. Unlike in some other programming projects, the commit history of SE repos is very important because it constitues a human-readable log of the changes (editorial and otherwise) we have made to the book. The review process involves having the reviewer examine the history commit by commit to make sure editorial and non-editoral changes are not mixed together. We ask that first producers follow the step by step guide closely, including the recommended commit sequence, in order to make the review process go smoothly.

I also noticed that you added some helper files (the mise and sed files). We only include the files that are directly necessary to produce the ebook in the repository, and keep all other files (scripts, notes, etc.) outside of the repository.

In order to save time for both yourself and the reviewer, I suggest starting the project again, following the step-by-step guide closely. I know that this might seem like a waste of work, but it will go much more quickly now that you have more familiarity with the tools. Part of why we have people follow the guide so closely at first is that there is a certain logic behind the order that is only apparent once you have completeted the entire project end-to-end. More experienced producers have some leeway but even then we follow the guide closely whenever possible.

No worries at all, I totally understand! I am definitely still learning the toolset, the style guide, and the Standard Ebooks process, and I understand my commit history is very messy. I'll start fresh and stick closer to the guide so the history is easier to review.

I have not yet chosen a cover painting.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

A question: as I find and fix issues, would you prefer that I amend and rebase the appropriate step’s commit?

The important thing is to keep the commits discrete and atomic. If it makes sense to amend a previous commit, you can do that, but more often than not you will want to create a new commit.

Gotcha! I will use my best judgement there. I just don't want to make a mess of the commit history like in my previous attempt.

What is the proper semantic inflection for a blockquote that contains an excerpt from a newspaper?

No semantics, it's just a <blockquote>

If possible yes, it's preferable to keep a cleaner commit history if
rebasing is not too annoying. However the repo can easily get into a
state where rebasing creates a lot of difficult merge conflicts. If that
happens then it's fine to just add a commit instead.

For a date given as "7-27-'03," what is the correct choice for a dash? My guess from reading the SEMOS is to use figure dashes here (https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.8.6/8-typography#8.7.7.2).

I've deleted the old repo and re-created it so I can start fresh as Weijia suggested. I've done a much better job with the commit history this time, and I'm working through a proofreading now.

Three questions about dates:

- Should a year given as ’62 be changed to sixty-two?
- Should a date given as May 15, 1893 be changed to May fifteenth, 1893?
- Are these editorial changes?
