[Alas, the NNTP server I use was once again down yesterday.]

With summer solstice rolling around, the major story of the week
has to be the melting of permafrost releasing carbon:

2006/06/15: SciDaily: Thawing Soil In Permafrost A Significant Source Of Carbon
The largest carbon reservoir on Earth is the ocean, which scientists
estimate holds about 40,000 gigatons; soils contain about 2,500 Gt
and vegetation about 650 Gt. According to the authors,
about 500 Gt of carbon are contained in the thaw-threatened loess,
also called yedoma, of Siberia and Alaska.

A study by British and Canadian researchers suggests restoration methods
of the past cannot necessarily be applied to the climate of the future.
The scientists -- James Harris of Cranfield University, along with
Richard Hobbs and Eric Higgs of the University of Victoria --
say ecosystems behave in unpredictable ways, therefore restoration
ecologists are often faced with unforeseen challenges.

A couple of polls relating to GW were released this week:

<http://pewglobal.org/reports/display.php?ReportID=252>
2006/06/13: Pew: America's Image Slips, But Allies Share U.S. Concerns
Over Iran, Hamas No Global Warming Alarm in the U.S., China
There also is a substantial gap in concern over global warming -
roughly two-thirds of Japanese (66%) and Indians (65%) say they
personally worry a great deal about global warming. Roughly half
of the populations of Spain (51%) and France (46%) also express
great concern over global warming, based on those who have heard
about the issue. But there is no evidence of alarm over global
warming in either the United States or China - the two largest
producers of greenhouse gases. Just 19% of Americans and 20% of
the Chinese who have heard of the issue say they worry a lot
about global warming - the lowest percentages in the 15 countries
surveyed. Moreover, nearly half of Americans (47%) and somewhat
fewer Chinese (37%) express little or no concern about the problem.

to draft a climate change plan within 60 days and live up to the Kyoto
targets set by the previous Liberal government.

There is simply no credible way to attack climate change without raising the cost

there is no (large) scaled solution to this problem," Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia
University told the Liberal-dominated Canada 2020 conference.

Shanghai is under water. Oh, no! Who's gonna make those little

Now here is a succinct argument for energy efficiency:

<http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/science/nature/5080044.stm>
2006/06/15: BBC: Firms feel heat over energy waste
UK businesses will waste more than £500m worth of energy over the summer
months, a report has said. The study for the Carbon Trust says the
"staggering" wastage will result in more than eight million tonnes of CO2
being released into the atmosphere. Firms could cut their emissions and
bills by 15% if they used energy more wisely, the trust suggests.

The reaction of business to climate change will be critical:
