I keep hearing everybody say what a great foundation 14.1 is for
playing any game of pool, so I'd like to play some straight pool. My
problem is that I don't know anyone in my area that actually plays
straight pool...

What I'd like to do is buy a couple of 14.1 DVD's (my VCR has been
mothballed) that illustrate how to handle the transition phase of
getting from one rack to the next. I don't mean 'teaching' dvd's I'd
prefer to see actual matches.

Anyone have any recommendations? I did a search and saw Accustats has
some from the last US Open 14.1 matches - any good ones there I should
be looking at? Are there certain players I should be emulating?

Thanks...

You probably should start with an instructional tape. VHS...Mike
Sigel...How to play 8ball, 9ball, and straight. He shows you how to go
from one rack to another and what type of english to use in breaking up
the rack and leaving an open shot.

Matches to look for and buy on
DVD...Sigel/Rempe...Archer/Carter...Sigel/Zuglan (a must!)
Crane/Balsis...Mosconi/Crane...Sigel/Mizerak. Doesn't get much
better than those.

I threw away my VHS player - is it available on DVD? I suppose I could
have it converted but the quality on the tapes I've converted in the
past has been poor.

To emulate? Lol. Or are you willing to show me how to play straight
pool?

I bet we've got more beer down here... and if we run out, there's
always Gideon's beer fridge with the pumps.

Sure, take a trip to Lethbridge and I'll help with the break-out shots. We
can sample the local breweries selection. I'm fairly sure we won't run out.

absolutely have to.

And, yes, everyone in Toronto is gay... even the Mayor is on a float
every year in the annual gay parade....

OTOH, did I mention I live in Scaborough?

It may be the murder, drugs, racism, prostitution, and petty crime
capital of the country, but it's home sweet home to me...

It didn't used to be available on DVD. Maybe it is now, or someone can
copy it from VHS to DVD. I have it in VHS, but I don't have a machine
that will convert it.

Only in Toronto, eh? BTW, tell your buddy Steve to stop spending all of
our tax money on all of those 'seminar' boondoggles at Meech Lake.

Its my experience that the Accu-stats player review tapes are fantastic.
We recently got a tape with Jim Rempe doing a player review on his match
against George San Souci from 2000. He beat Ginky 150 to -12. All of the
matches from that tournament are recommended. I also have Grady's Straight
Pool Instructional, Jim Rempe's "How to Run A Rack in Straight Pool" and
"How to run a Hundred Balls" - Great stuff - all on TAPE. You'd have to
get with Pat to see if they are available on dvd - some are - some
aren't. New stuff that I have already ordered are Gerry Watson's (The
Ghost) "Graduation Class" - and Irving Crane vs Joe Balsis from 1966 -
Irvng Crane runs 150 - those are both available on dvd. Pat is also
putting together an instructional dvd called "Straight pool - Pool's
Cruelest Discipline" - not sure when it is coming out, once again, you'll
have to call Pat or check the website www.accu-stats.com / 1-800-828-0397.

Thanks, Debra. That exactly the type of input I was looking for...

David,

I found it very useful to go through Cranfield's "Straight Pool Bible" and
Capelle's "Play Your Best Straight Pool" before (especially), with, and
after watching tapes. Both books cover essentially the same material, with
Capelle being considerably more detailed and with *lots* more diagrams. The
point is that it's often difficult to determine what really good players are
trying to accomplish, and Cranfield and Capelle will tell you that. Also,
I've found that for me playing Equal Offense is very useful practice;
perhaps more so than starting off by setting up straight pool break shots by
hand.

That's like FARGO isn't it? I actually do that a lot and often run the
15 balls, but then I can't quite conceive of the best way to break out
the rack if I re-rack them after 14 ala 14.1... so I need to see actual
examples to get the idea. I'm very visually oriented.

Believe it or not, I've never actually seen 14.1 played.

David The Hamster Malone wrote:

To play good or great 14.1, being visually oriented isn't going to be
as helpful as you think. The reason is, you just won't be able to
figure out what the hell they're doing and why. There's no way in the
world you'll be able to figure out what kind of english they're using
on the break ball to scatter some balls out of the rack, then move to
the rail and come back with a good angle so that it stays there instead
of flying all over the table.
Somebody will have to tell that to you either in person, in a book
(Phil Capelle Straight Pool), or in various instructional videos.
There are also a lot of combo shots out of the rack, caroms, throw
shots, etc., that would NEVER look like they can go to the naked
untrained eye. You'll never figure that out on your own either.

If you want to practice 14.1 the way it should be played as opposed to
blasting a rack open in equal offense or fargo...rack 14 balls
up...leave one out somewhere near the rack on either side or
behind...take CB in hand and knock that ball in while trying to scatter
the rack. Then pick the remaining 14 balls off if you can and do it
again. You MUST set yourself up with the correct angle on every shot
and be able to plan far in advance. You can't just pick one or two
balls off here and there with no long range plan for patterns, problem
balls, and even choosing your break ball for the next rack very early.
It's quite complex for someone that has no clue. Hell, it's quite
complex for ANYONE!!

I have had the same problem with 14.1 practice. Unable to get the second
rack broke open. A long time ago in another galaxy fa fa away (before I
got plonked) PJ told me (He probably doesn't even remember...ALL! HAIL! P!!)
to do (SURPRISE!!!) what Billy has already mentioned. To start with a 14
ball rack and set up the 15th ball as a break ball, break the rack and
go from there..
