In the preview for the next issue (the current one being January 1997's),
the title that most blares out at you is: "A 6th Magic Color?" in nice
large letters.

No offense to anyone who works for that august publication, but just what
the sam hill have they come up with now? I thought we'd been over this
time and time again. Think they actually have something here, something
that you could reasonably interpret as pointing to the possibility of a 6th
color? Or just a cynical trick to sell more copies? ;>

It's a well known fact that 5th edition will introduce a new color.
I have here a bit of a transcript of an interview with a reliable inside
source:

Source: That's right, you've heard this rumor for a while, but this time
we're really doing it. We're bringing in a new color.

Me: Won't that upset the balance of the game?

Source: Hey, you're talking to the people that came up with phasing!
Trust me, the new color will integrate seamlessly into the set.

Me: But Won't there be a small amount of cards of that color and a
jillion of other colors? It will be grossly outnumbered.

Source: Will it? (smiles enigmatically)

Me: So what's the new color?

Source: Green.

Me: There's already Green!

Source: This is a different Green.

Me: In what way? A different shade of Green? Like Mint or something?

Source: You'll see. And this is a fact, by the way. The rules team has
already written the sentence that will go into the 5th edition rulebook
to explain the new color and how its special powers are used.

-- end of transcript --

So you see, a 6th color is coming, and it sounds as though they've really
thought it out this time.

Inquest? The Spy magazine of the CCG industry? The magazine more full

Now wait. Is there some humor here I didn't catch? If not, may I remind
you that Adam stated there would be no new cards in 5th? Not a
single one. All cards that will be in 5th are already out, in different
expansions. Now explain how they could introduce a 6th color that way.

Maybe they are getting an early start for an elaborate April
Fool's joke.
Either that, or maybe WotC is going to make another rules change
declaring that the term "colorless" shall now be known as the 6th Color
of "Beige."
Therefore, when you play "Ghostly Flame," all Red and Black
sources of damage shall be "Beige" sources of damage. At least it
doesn't sound quite as violent, eh?? :P

My vote goes for a trick to sell more copies. With all the Magic cards out
there, a new colour would have to fill almost an entire set to make it
competitive...

"Magic: The Gathering The Yellow Card Expansion" just doesn't sound like
it would go over very well. :-)

Hi everybody,

well, isn't this what we all expected? One day, when Magic's Pentacle of
Colors is worn out, it will be expanded. Why not? At least if they are
introducing something REALLY new.

Which gives me the idea....

Call all R/B cards "crimson".
Call all B/U cards "midnight"
Call all U/W cards "azure"
Call all W/G cards "light-green"
Call all G/R cards "brown".

Whoops - five new colors.

Add another category for those cards that include more than two colors and
call it "rainbow".

Another "new" color.

No, I don't think it will be like this. If WotC are to introduce a sixth
color, it'll be something totally new - just to prove they haven't become
rusty yet.

Yes that's what we need, a new color Yellow!

Let's see, it will have an amber ogre, a yellow knight with
last strike (Sir Robin no doubt!)

It's creature of choice will be newts, Mons Newt Raiders
Newt Balloon Brigade
Armies of Newt
Newt Grenade
Newt of the Domed Building
Brass Plate Newts
Hurlon Newt (my favorite!)

All of it's spells will be interupts, that actually end up
slowing the game down and preventing players from
getting anything done.

Obfuscate: Target opponent must play with all cards face down
on the table, and may only look at one card at a time, including
the cards in his or her hand and graveyard.

Delay: Each player untaps their permanents one at a time, any
player may pay 1 life to prevent a card from being untapped.

(Hey, that's actually a good idea!)

Golden Newt: 3YY
Tap to gain control of any target permanent. (land,
artifact, creature, enchantment) Owner of target permanent may
pay 3 life to prevent change of control

Aggravate: You may remove the top 4 cards in your library to counter
target spell.

OK, so I got off on the newt idea, but no, the point is,
We don't need another color to add more 3/3 (etc) creatures.
New card ideas can be introduced just fine with 5 colors,
Do we really need more goblins? More Merefolk? More falcons?
Actually yes, another falcon, with banding or first strike
would be really cool and make my mesa falconers worth more money.

I say no to a sixth color, we don't need all the stupid
useless common crap that would come with it.

There are other possibilities. It abviously can't be a whole new color
because it would completely disrupt the game.

I would have to be something wierd like "colourless non artifact" cards.
Here is a exmample:

Energy Spell (4) (note the colourless casting cost)
Sorcery
All creatures get a -1/-1 counter (or some similar text).

(note it is a sorcery not a artifact etc)

Maybe give them silver borders and call the new color silver.

Another possibility is giving all spells like dark heart of the woods a
silver border instead of gold. That is gold cards have side by side
colours as casting costs and silver have opposing colours as casting
costs.

There are other possibilities but I doubt it will be a standard colour as
we know it.

Just remember that we heard all these rumors on the Usenet before Mirage
was released. As with Inquest, there is a delay on some of their stories,
and we may have already heard all sides of this one.

I always thought 'silver' should be like this: simialr to gold, where there
is more than one color in the casting cost, but, the colored mana can be
eithe rof any two colors, and the card counts as both colors. For example,
a 4/4 creature could have a cc of 3(WB)(WB), where WB means that those
tow mana can each be either white or blue, but no other colors. SO you could
pay it with 2 white, 2 blue, or 1 of each.

Just imagine... "We got rid of StP so now we need to come up with
something sort of like it. How about....1 colorless, bury target
creature!" This is really a neat idea, though. The problem I see with it
is that with a colorless casting cost, it might allow some colors to do
things that aren't in their "theme" (of course, everything except Green
already can, so maybe errata to the colorless cards...).

> I always wondered about this. I'm just waiting ofr the legendary artifacts
> that were promised in the Mirage rules.

Yeah, I've been wondering about this too. Wouldn't it be interesting if
legendary artifacts were just like super versions of normal artifacts?
Make them unique (only one in a deck) and do something like this:
Cap of the Ice Jester
6 Artifact
During your upkeep, look through target opponent's library. Choose three
cards from that library and remove them from the game.
Or...
Icy on Steroids
6 Artifact
1,T: Tap target artifact, creature, and land.

Neat, huh? Maybe a little overpowered <g>, so just put one of these new
"balancing" restrictions on them like, oh, "Discard your hand", or
something else stupid.

> >(note it is a sorcery not a artifact etc)
> >
> >Maybe give them silver borders and call the new color silver.

There was a rumor going around before MI that all the opposing color
multis were going to be silver. I was quite unhappy that they weren't,
because a)silver would look very cool and b)Dark Heart isn't unique
anymore. Oh well...

In this case, punctuation is all-important. They're not doing an
article saying there is a sixth color, they're doing an article
*asking* if there is a sixth color. Which means it's perfectly
sensible for the article to conclude, "no, there isn't a sixth color".
A little cynical, but a perfectly legitimate way of doing a headline
that's been used for years when a newspaper wants to make a weak story
more interesting?

>: Call all G/R cards "brown".
>: Whoops - five new colors.

When there was a special announcement that Mirage would have 5 'special
collecer's' cards, I immeadeatly though this: instead of having cards that
requitre mana of different colors in the CC, cards that require mana
of two specific colors.... almost like colorless, but not quite. So,
for example, a CC migght b 3(B/U), so you can use 3 colorless and one
baclk or 3 colorless and one blue. I dunno, kinda weird.
