Hi all,

Does anyone know a las 1.2 to las 2.0 conversion tool?

Thanks,

F.B.

Hello Frederic,

there is no LAS 2.0 since it did not make it past an early draft. This
draft specification was way too complicated to be robustly
implemented. In fact I had been solicited by someone from the NGA to
provide a prototype implementation and I flat out denied to do so
after ready the draft specification of LAS 2.0. So as long as God is
on our side there will not be a LAS 2.0 ... (-;

I am curious ... who is asking for (using?) LAS 2.0 ... and why?

Hi Martin,

We have a Trimble Software using some kind of proprietary LAS 2.0.

Regards,

F.B.

Hello Frederic,

A proprietary LAS 2.0? Wonder what the ASPRS and the LAS Working
Groups' position be on that since I seem to recall that they do own
the copyright. But I better not push anyone's buttons here ... (-;

I was meaning to send you a number of links on discussions about LAS
2.0 that we have had on the USGS click LiDAR Bulletin Board but
unfortunately the US government has mandated the USGS to close down
this wonderful resource citing "privacy and security issues".
Unfortunately, the folks at the USGS have so far not followed through
on their vague promises to find a way for us to regain access to the
many valuable insights, questions, and answers of numerous individuals
on LAS and LiDAR processing. Hence "the collective memory of the LiDAR
community" from 2005 - 2011 remains lost. I would be happy if the
federal employees from the USGS (whom we trusted with all the content
that we created over the years) could provide an update on the
situation (given they are allowed to speak without endangering
themselves or their loved ones). Sorry, I just cannot help but poking
fun at this for otherwise it would just be sad ... (-;

If there were anyone using a las 2.0 (it has been suggested that trimble might), they would probably follow the ASPRS proposed format:

other than that document, I think the only other good reference on the proposed format would be to contact whoever gave you the data (trimble).

Good luck,
Ty

Thanks,

That’s some of the use expected: importing airborne lidar as “2.0” to Trident (Key holder).

Hello,

This brochure of eCognition (Trimble) mentions the Trident LAS 2.0 format.

There's certainly talk of LAS 2.0 support (in whatever form that may take) from Trimble here:

I'd be interested in a version of LAS that allows more than 4 billion points per file :-)

Hello Doug,

the concept of a LAS 1.2 file that "logically" (not "physically")
contains over 4 billion has been added to LAStools in June 2011 and is
done with '-i *.laz -merged' or '-i *.las -merged' or similar. See
here for details:

http://groups.google.com/group/lastools/browse_thread/thread/5a9f446f40e766a0/

Personally I see no benefit in creating one gigantic file containing
over 4 billion points. I would rather store 20 files containing 1
billion each or so ... but I am happy to hear you keep such good
company, surrounding yourself with that many billions of points. (-;

Martin @rapidlasso
