Protestors have staged a demonstration outside Downing Street against
Gordon Brown and Condoleezza Rice's military talks on Afghan war.

US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice visited London for talks with
Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Foreign Secretary David Miliband on
Wednesday.

The visit comes as Washington mounts a diplomatic offensive to
persuade its NATO allies to step up their military commitment in
Afghanistan.

But as the talks went on the demonstrators just outside Downing Street
were determined to make it known to her she was not welcome there.

"I don't want people of the world think Rice has been welcomed as some
kind of a dignitary here," a demonstrator told PressTV correspondent.

"As far as I'm concerned she is a war criminal. [She is] part of
Bush's complete devastation of Iraq and Afghanistan," she added.

British MP George Galloway also told PressTV that the problems in
Afghanistan should be left to its people to fix, not outside forces.

"Afghanistan is a sovereign country and must reach its own
arrangements. Go home Rice. You are a dangerous person...You are here to
cause more problems in the world," Galloway said.

New war vets likely to face job hurdles.
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/02/07/new-war-vets-likely-to-face-job-hurdles/
A new Department of Veterans Affairs report finds that "recently
discharged veterans are having a harder time finding civilian jobs and
are more likely to earn lower wages for years due partly to employer
concerns about their mental health and overall skills." For example,
"18 percent of the veterans who sought jobs within one to three years
of discharge were unemployed, while one out of four who did find jobs
earned less than $21,840 a year." 7:10 pm | Comment (18)

OTTAWA - Human-rights groups claimed victory Thursday even though a
judge refused their request to temporarily stop Canadian soldiers from
transferring enemy prisoners into Afghan custody.

Federal Court Justice Anne Mactavish made it clear she's not happy
with the way Canada has managed the safety of captives in the past,
nor is she confident there can ever be any assurance they won't be
mistreated by Afghan authorities in the future.

In a 36-page ruling, Mactavish said the matter can be reviewed if
troops resume the transfers, which the military stopped in November
after finding evidence of torture in Afghan jails.
