Tinker Camp is a half day, week-long camp for kids offered by Rob
van Nood, 3,4,5 advisor at Trillium, and me, Blake Swensen, Trillium
computer dude and father of former Trillium Students. This summer
will be our third year.
In themed sessions,we present open-ended problems and tasks that
require kids to use creativity to solve. By tinkering and hacking
the problems, kids learn to accept themselves as Problem Solvers.
Session A: July 9- 13: FLIGHT
We offered this for the first time last summer. Using a wind tunnel,
air-powered rockets, propellers, water pressure and all manner of
materials, we allow kids to discover their inner rocket scientist.
Session B: July 16 -20: MACHINES
Taking our cues from the Exploritorium, kids will be using gears,
cogs, cams and cranks, kids will test and tweak their very own
Automata.
Session C: July 23-27: SURVIVAL
Kids will imagine a world where they are they only ones alive. Kids
will learn to make fires, filter water, and perhaps even build their
own transportation.
Tinker Camp runs from
8:30 and
12:30 with early
drop-off and late pick-up available to help working parents with
commute and lunch-time travel.It is for kids who will be entering
the 3rd grade in September through those who will be entering 7th.
Tinkers will learn to use real tools like drills, saws, hammers,
knives and other sharp or dangerous tools.
The cost is
$125 with a
$25 materials fee per
session, and we offer
scholarships for families who qualify
for free and reduced lunch.
This year, the camp will be held at
Trillium Charter School,
although this is not a Trillium-sponsored camp.

Thomas Edison was a tinker and inventor, but he failed virtually
countless times before the first light bulb worked. But today, are
we allowing our kids the luxury of failure as part of the process of
discovery? Or is the pressure for immediacy ultimately taking little
notches out of their self esteem? Tinker Camp seeks to provide the
time and a safe space to explore all aspects of discovery.
