*Master of Science in forestry with a focus in agroforestry (MS)* *New in
2011!*
Agroforestry, a farming system that integrates crops and/or livestock with
trees and shrubs, is gaining recognition as an integral component of a
multifunctional working landscape. While agroforestry has been gaining
attention in the U.S. and worldwide, the need for trained professionals in
agroforestry also has been expanding. The Center for Agroforestry at the
University of Missouri's new online master's degree program will help fill
that void.
The MS with a focus in agroforestry curriculum will be a 30-credit
non-thesis degree through the Department of Forestry at the University of
Missouri with a 16-credit required core including a professional paper,
optional 3-credit field internship and elective course work. The graduate
certificate in agroforestry (approval pending) will be a 12-credit
curriculum with four core courses. The MS in forestry with a focus in
agroforestry is designed to be a flexible degree that can meet the advanced
educational goals of a wide range of students. The program was developed to
provide advanced study and experience in agroforestry and related fields
that are not readily available at other colleges and universities in the
U.S. or abroad.
This online master's degree program is designed for professionals working in
natural resources around the globe who already have an undergraduate degree
in a related field. In addition, the online masters is open to all
individuals holding accredited BS or BA degrees who wish to expand their
breadth and depth of knowledge in the field of agroforestry.
The 12-credit certificate will be available in the future and will be for
current students interested in supplementing their degree in a related field
and for Peace Corps volunteers and military personnel who work in countries
where agroforestry is integral. Similar to the full online master's, the
certificate will be open to all individuals holding accredited BS or BA
degrees who wish to expand their breadth and depth of knowledge in the field
of agroforestry.
After completing the online master's degree, graduates can expect to:
* Possess the technical knowledge required to advise landowners,
businesses and other organizations that seek to create multi-functional
working landscapes to diversify products, markets and farm income; improve
soil, water and air quality; sequester carbon; enhance and conserve land and
water habitats for fish and habitat; and increase biodiversity.
* Broaden career opportunities, successfully competing for both U.S. and
international professional positions requiring an interdisciplinary master’s
degree.
* Increase immediate and long-term earning potential.
Our faculty have many years of experience in teaching, research and
extension/outreach in the U.S. and internationally and are recognized
experts in their fields. The online degree is based in The Center for
Agroforestry at the University of Missouri, but is granted by the forestry
department. The department is one of the leading educational institutions in
the nation emphasizing an integrated approach to natural resource
management.
First of its kind
This online master's degree program will be unique and fill a void across
the globe. To the best of our knowledge, there are no similar comprehensive
programs in agroforestry elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad. In contrast, many
institutions offer a single agroforestry course.
