Hello,
My name is Nadine and I am a grad student at UMUC. I need some help completing an assignment for my introduction to bioinformatics class . I tried doing it myself but I couldn't find my way around in the website. Please help. Here are the questions:

a. Using human genome Feb 2009 (Hg19), locate the gene.  Clear all tracks and only display 1. Base Position (full), 2.                      RefSeq Genes (full), 3. ENCODE Regulation (show). Take a screenshot of the gene with those three tracks, including regions 1000 bp immediately upstream and 1000 bp downstream of the gene.

b. How many mRNA transcript does this gene have?  How many exons in each transcript?

c. using 5 sentences or less, discuss what information does the ENCODE track provide?

I look forward to your response.

Thanks,
Nadine

Hi Nadine,

Thank you for your questions about using the UCSC Genome Browser. I highly recommend taking advantage of some the introductory resources that are available for the browser. I would start by watching these tutorials: http://www.openhelix.com/ucsc. You can find information on further training and tutorials here: http://genome.ucsc.edu/training.html. The OpenHelix tutorials should help get you started so that you can answer the homework questions on your own. If you still find yourself getting stuck on your homework questions, I would recommend talking with your classmates about how they solved the problems or talking to your TA or professor for more assistance.

I hope this is helpful. If you have any further questions, please reply to gen...@soe.ucsc.edu. All messages sent to that address are archived on a publicly-accessible Google Groups forum. If your question includes sensitive data, you may send it instead to genom...@soe.ucsc.edu.
