One thing they needed to add to this story...when you are hooking up a trailer, don't get distracted by phone calls, texts or conversation. That is when you make mistakes...and maybe forget to hook that latch, or install that pin....

And use the safety chains!  I’ve seen people not use them, and knew a woman whose trailer didn’t even have them. Guess whose trailer got separated from her tow vehicle?

Just as an aside here - years ago I made a paid haul from Agoura to Del Mar, and because I had to go back a few days later to pick up the horses, I left my rig parked in the "secure lot". When I went back on Sunday to retrieve horses and trailer, unbeknownst to me, someone had apparently tried to steal my wheels, and must have been interrupted mid crime, because about 2 miles onto the freeway coming home, with TWO BIG HORSES and my daughter in the rig, (my daughter was in the truck FYI) my right front tandem trailer wheel POPPED OFF AND flew down the hillside next to the freeway. Thank GOD we were able to pull over safely, but here I was, with a toddler and two horses, and then, THANK GOD, some nice folks who had just happened to go to church EARLY that morning, pulled over, found my wheel and while two of the three folks stayed with the rig, the third took me and my daughter into town a few minutes away and found someone to replace the tire. They then helped me replace the wheel and, thanking them and GOD, off we went. So - yes indeed - ALWAYS check! I can hardly believe anyone could be so despicable but there you go. My lugs were apparently just loose enough for the pressure to cause the wheel to come off. It was pretty scary.

At the risk of making myself look stupid...

I can be very ADD so even if I think I'm ready, I always do a
walkaround RIGHT before I leave and actually touch each item I check.
Because I'm often running around loading last minute forgotten things,
re-opening latches and doors, I always do the entire re-check right
before I go. One time I had thrown a last minute bale of hay in the
back, went to do some other things, was about to drive off, thinking,
I already did my check, but did the right-before-I-drive-off check and
found the ramp down - (duh, and phew).

We have multiple trailers, utility, etc and different sized balls.
Twice I have off with the trailer on a too-small ball, as was demoed
in that video. So I have added this to my walk-around check. If this
happens you should hear a clunk every time you drive over a bump or
step on the brakes. If you have multiple ball sizes and ever hear this
clunk, stop right away and check the ball size!

Maybe it was here on ridecamp, I heard of someone start leaving camp
with the horse still tied to the trailer, lol. People spotted it right
away though and stopped them, so no harm done. So yeah, one of my
items is "horse IN trailer, CHECK!" :)

And in regards to safety chains, make sure they are crossed underneath the hitch, not hooked up parallel to each other.  Just another precaution in case your hitch bounces off the ball – it will prevent the trailer from doing a nosedive into the road.

I always do a walk around before pulling out of the
driveway, but then I actually go one step further. I
have a spot about 2 miles down the road out of our
neighborhood where I always pull over and do a
second walk around, and check everything again.

Yes, sometimes (ok, a LOT) I'm late and it's hard
to stop anyway... but just do it.

We bought and use locking hitch pins for our bumper pull trailers after one of my dad's employees had an issue with a trencher trailer.  While the trailer was on the job site for the day, someone had pulled the PIN on the actual hitch, not something that we always think to check while doing a walk through safety check.  When accelerating onto the freeway, the entire hitch (still hooked to the trailer ball), slid out of the truck.  Thankfully the safety chains were crossed under correctly, as they supported the nose of the trailer and he was able to get to the side of the freeway and get stopped using the chains only.

 

So add to list - locking pins or check the hitch pin as well.

This happened to me several years ago.  Coming home from a ride I was going 60 in the slow lane.  Lyric and notoriously naughty Merrylegs the pony were in the trailer and the girls were sleeping. They had completed the 25 the day before. It was a beautiful spring morning.  Then what sounded like a bomb went off behind the RV -  the trailer came apart from the RV!!! 

 As my guardian angels were watching over ALL of us, no one was hurt. A very sweet man stopped and got the trailer back on the RV and bought a new keeper pin - the pin that someone had removed.

From then on I started doing "safety checks" - look at the hitch, check all the connections - every time I stop. NO MATTER WHAT!!! I always do a safety check and if possible post someone with the trailer to keep and eye on the horses and the rig.  Have a wonderful weekend!
